Is the 2023 Toyota Sequoia Actually Worth $60K?
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia’s MSRP shot up by $8,000 over last year’s model. The all-new third-row SUV has the highest starting price in its segment. Here is why the entry-level Sequoia might be worth $58k.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia has a high starting price
You can get a Ford Expedition for just $51,080 and a Chevrolet Suburban for $52,400. Nissan undercuts both of these SUVs with its Armada MSRP: $48,900. The 2022 Toyota Sequoia split the difference, starting at $50,500.
Toyota completely redesigned the Toyota for the 2023 model year. The new full-size SUV is based on the reengineered third-generation Tundra. Along with new looks and new technology, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia got a new starting price: $58,300.
This advertised MSRP doesn’t account for Toyota’s $1,495 destination charge. According to Cars.com, even the cheapest 2023 Sequoia is knocking the door on $60k—its final price is $59,795.
The all-new Sequoia is in a class of its own
Toyota shocked the automotive world when it announced that it will build every new Sequoia with a hybrid engine. The i-FORCE MAX is an expensive option on the Tundra pickup truck. It leverages an electric motor, alongside the standard twin-turbocharged V6, to make 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. All of this while beating the outgoing V8’s fuel mileage.
The 2023 Sequoia is not the first hybrid SUV in its segment. That distinction goes to the Ford Expedition. That said, Ford’s PowerBoost hybrid drivetrain is an expensive option on the Ford Expedition. Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX comes standard on every new Sequoia.
The 2023 Sequoia is still traditional where it counts
While Toyota was axing the old Sequoia’s 5.7-liter V8, it was also reconsidering the vehicle’s other technology. The outgoing Sequoia featured independent rear suspension. But the 2023 model swapped back to a live rear axle.
What’s the benefit of this more truck-like suspension? The 2023 Sequoia performs very well when heavily loaded. Its trailering capacity is not only improved, but early reviewers report its very stable while towing.
The outgoing Sequoia suffered from a six-speed automatic transmission, but the 2023 model received a major upgrade. Toyota has sourced this SUV’s new ten-speed automatic from Aisin. Paired with the i-FORCE MAX electric motor, the new transmission boasts incredibly smooth acceleration.
Some 4x4s are tossing part-time 4WD in favor of full-time 4WD. This is another area where Toyota leaned into tradition. A 2023 Sequoia equipped with 4WD also benefits from Toyota’s advanced off-road driver-aid software, previously only available on the 4Runner. This includes multi-terrain select that allows the Sequoia to navigate very difficult trails without even locking its rear differential. But the Sequoia’s driver can still choose to lock its traditional differential and shift its traditional transfer case in and out of 4WD.
