Ahh. A new car. It wreaks of new car smell, has under 1000 miles on it, and feels secure with that factory warranty. A new car warranty lends a little extra peace of mind as you cruise around in your new Chevrolet vehicle. At least it should. Does Chevy offer a good warranty package?

Some warranties go above and beyond to provide an extra measure of security to new vehicle owners. Others offer coverage on the lower end. Let’s dig a little deeper and find out what Chevy has to offer.

The Chevrolet warranty package ranges with the big names that comprise the lower half of the comparison such as GMC, Ford, Honda, and Toyota. But it has a little more to offer than some others. Here’s an overview of Chevy’s warranty coverage to help you decide whether the warranty package they offer is up to your new car standard.

The Chevrolet warranty

The Chevrolet warranty package starts with a 3 year, 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Factory parts are covered for the same measurement of time as many other popular carmakers’ warranties such as Dodge and Ford.

As far as basic factory warranties go this is pretty much as low as it gets, but a large number of other brands offer this same bumper to bumper coverage. Manufacturers like Mazda, Nissan, and Dodge also offer bumper to bumper for 3 years, 36,000 miles. By comparison, Chevy’s doing OK.

The powertrain warranty offered by Chevy is also side by side with all the others out there who offer a 5 year, 60,000 mile warranty for a new vehicle’s powertrain. This covers components such as the transfer case, drive systems, the engine, and transmission/transaxle.

One nice bonus here is that Chevrolet’s warranty offers up to 5 years, 100,000 miles if you purchase a truck with a Turbo-Diesel V8 engine. Good news if you’re in the market for a 1500 series light duty or 3500 series heavy duty pickup truck.

What about emissions, corrosion and accessories?

The Chevy emissions warranty covers emissions systems, the catalytic converter for example, for 2 years, 24,000 miles. Diesel trucks benefit again with a 5 year, 50,000 mile emission system warranty. Chevrolet also offers a state-specific warranty for California.

Corrosion coverage is 6 years, 100,000 miles for metal that rusts through. Like other manufacturers, Chevrolet doesn’t cover superficial damage like scratches and scrapes. Several others, including Ford and Honda, offer their corrosion coverage for a year less, but the mileage is unlimited. Small details like this and whether or not you are a high mileage driver are important to take into consideration.

Gm accessories are covered by the Chevrolet warranty package under the bumper to bumper warranty if they are in included in the original purchase. If an accessory is purchased from GM later and added onto the vehicle, the warranty protects for 1 year, 12,000 miles.

Hybrids?

Chevy’s warranty package offers competitive hybrid-specific component coverage for the Chevrolet Volt, Bolt EV, and Malibu Hybrid. This protects for 8 years, 100,000 miles.

The hybrid warranty follows suit with other carmakers who offer special hybrid warranties with their hybrid vehicles. Chevrolet is keeping up with the pack.

Is it any good?

As with all warranties, there are various limitations and it’s important to talk with your dealer or take a glance at the manual for a more comprehensive understanding. Chevy’s warranty package is in the low end of the middle of the pack, but it’s not at the bottom. In addition, it has some extra bonus coverage for diesel owners. Throw in the roadside assistance that beats Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota plus the limited complimentary maintenance package and it’s not looking too bad. The Chevrolet warranty isn’t fantastic, but it does its fair share to cover new car owners.
