In 2019, the Ram 1500 got a lot of performance upgrades. It now has a higher towing capacity, more infotainment features, and an upscale interior that can rival any sports cars. It also got an eTorque mild-hybrid system, which gives the truck a better fuel economy score.

The Ram’s gas mileage will get another improvement for 2020. An EcoDiesel engine version will go on sale by the end of 2019. We have no doubt that it will improve the Ram 1500’s performance, but is it enough to warrant the higher price tag?

The 2020 Ram 1500′ EcoDiesel engine

The Ram 1500 already has a capable 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine. This powerhouse can produce 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. For an additional upgrade, it can be purchased with the mid-hybrid system. Without eTorque, the engine’s fuel economy is below average.

The new EcoDiesel offering is lighter with a better turbocharger and more efficient cylinder heads. It can get 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. This gives the Ram 1500 the highest torque rating of all trucks, even compared to the GM’s Duramax engine. Like the standard engine, this 3.0-liter V6 will be equipped with the eTorque motor.

The 2020 Ram 1500’s improved gas mileage

A 4WD Ram truck with the new diesel engine gets 21 MGP in the city and 29 MPG on the highway — an eight-MPG difference compared to trucks with the regular V8 diesel. In 2WD models, the EPA estimated 22 MPG city and 32 MPG highway.

While this is impressive, it’s still not as great as its competition. The 2020 Silverado has a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine that can get up to 35 MPG for both city and highway. Still, both of these are better than Ford’s Power Stroke engine, which only gets a combined rating of 22 MPG.

A higher towing capacity

With the new EcoDiesel, the 2020 Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,560 pounds. Thanks to the available Trailer Tow package, drivers can get a trailer brake controller and tow mirrors to transport cargo smoothly. Rearview cameras are standard, but you can get more visibility with the optional 360-degree camera system.

Safety features designed for trailering include trailer blind-spot monitoring and sway control. For loading up the truck bed, RamBoxes are available and the liftgate can open outwards in addition to being folded down.

More expensive

The only downside to the new V6 is its higher cost. With this engine under the hood, the 2020 Ram 1500 will cost up to $38,000. This makes it the most expensive engine in the lineup. However, it’s still cheaper compared to the competition.

One of Ford’s half-ton diesel trucks usually costs around $46,000 and has 40 lb-ft of torque less than the Ram’s Ecodiesel. Silverado trucks with the Duramax engine cost up to $45,000, but at least this truck has better fuel economy ratings. While its almost $10,000 more than the base Ram, the money you’ll save on gas may balance it out over time.

What else is new with the 2020 Ram 1500?

The EcoDiesel isn’t the only fresh offering for 2020. Rebel trims have a new driver comfort package as well as an available driver’s assistance technology suite. Laramie and Big Horn trims — both can house the EcoDiesel — also have an exclusive Night Edition paint.

Add the new engine with the luxury interior and you have a great truck both inside and out. If you have the money to pay for the extra power, the EcoDiesel is probably worth it.
