Is the Kia EV6 GT a Bargain Porsche Taycan?
Can you really compare the Kia EV6 GT to the Porsche Taycan? Yes, you can, and though it may be a surprise, it may even compete better than you thought. After learning about the EV6 GT, you might just save yourself $40,000 (or more) on a new electric sedan.
The EV6 GT is quicker than a Porsche Taycan
The GT badge says a lot about the performance of the EV6 GT. The GT part is Kia-speak for super-duper quick. In the EV6’s case, that means you get 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque. The base 2023 Porsche Taycan has a 402-horsepower motor that Porsche says will rocket the sedan to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
There’s no doubt that 5.1 seconds is quick, but sorry, Porsche. The EV6 GT can nail 60 in 3.0 seconds, according to MotorTrend. OK, for sure, you can order a quicker Taycan. The Taycan Turbo matches the EV6 GT to 60, and the Taycan Turbo S will beat it by a little bit. But, to get the 750-horsepower version of the Taycan, you’re spending $194,900. You almost buy 4 Kia EV6 GTs for that money.
Is a Taycan Turbo S worth four times the price of an EV6 GT?
The Kia EV6 is certainly a nice car. Kia’s new styling language with a retro-futuristic theme is hard to beat. It even has the same sedan/hatchback styling of the Taycan. The EV6 starts at $50,025 while the base Porsche Taycan starts at $90,900.
But, the Turbo S is a very nice car. Inside, you find the soft and thin, but surprisingly-durable leather that Porsche is known for on almost every surface. Since this is a Porsche, it was designed to handle and drive like a sports car, four doors or not. You sit low in the Taycan, too, almost Corvette low. The Taycan also can be had with options the Kia doesn’t offer, like four-zone climate control and four-wheel steering.
But is an EV6 GT really a bargain Porsche?
When you compare the two on numbers, and value for money, the Kia does seem like a bargain. Neither car has an incredible range, and in fact the Kia EV6 GT has the same 206-mile range as the Taycan. It also has one more seat. Where the Porsche can only seat four, thanks to rear buckets, the Kia can fit five adults.
The Kia also wins tons of awards. Earlier this year the Kia EV6 was named the most reliable electric car by Consumer Reports, as well as the best luxury SUV. J.D. Power named it the most appealing compact SUV. While the Taycan certainly has a sports car looks, and feel, it’s hard to justify the price when the EV6 GT is half the price.
