The Lexus GX and Lexus LX  both exhibit a commanding presence that’s hard to overlook. These Lexus models separate themselves from other luxury SUVs with their excellent reliability ratings and performance capabilities. But you might be wondering, is the Lexus GX or LX better?

The GX and LX are similar in many ways, especially when it comes to performance. Both models are old-school SUVs with truck-based platforms. These platforms translate into exceptional off-road performance. One key difference is that the GX is a midsize SUV, while the LX is a large one.

With the base GX 460, you get a smooth 301-hp 4.6-liter V8 engine linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s also standard with four-wheel drive and an independent suspension, as U.S. News highlights. The top-tier Luxury trim is available with the Off-Road package. The main downside to the GX is that its handling is clumsy, and its low fuel economy rating of 16 mpg overall.

The LX 570 also has a low fuel economy rating with a combined 14 mpg. It’s heavier weight makes it feel less agile and slow compared to some competitors. But on a brighter note, the LX shines for its glossy powertrain. All LX models come with a 383-hp 5.7-liter V8 engine and an eight-speed automatic. Critics also rave about the LX for its standard off-road goodies, including an adjustable suspension, crawl control, and a locking differential.

There are also a few distinctions between the GX and LX’s interiors. The GX comes standard with three rows that can accommodate up to seven; models with captain’s chairs seat six. The LX is a five-seater in its regular setup, but the three-row version can carry eight people.

Besides offering more interior space than the GX, the LX also has a fancier looking cabin. The LX comes with leather upholstery, while the GX comes with faux leather. You can upgrade either model with more frills, such as heated and cooled seats.

Lexus has made the GX and LX cabins more modern with advanced safety features. Both SUVs come with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Unfortunately, these models still aren’t available with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. However, one advantage the GX has is that it features a user-friendly touchscreen infotainment display. The LX has a computer-based infotainment system that some say is flat-out terrible.

So, is the GX or LX better?

A 2020 GX has an MSRP of $53,000, and the 2020 LX’s is $86,480. You may want to look at their class rivals for options with a longer list of modern features. However, the GX and LX’s strong reputation for reliability makes them more attractive. Both models are appropriate for upscale events and rough terrains. We’d say that the GX is the better choice since it’s more well-rounded. It’s a bit harder to justify the high price tag of a new LX.
