Is the Mustang SUV Electric?
The new Ford Mustang SUV is an electric SUV, with the Mustang name. Sure, several folks balked at the idea of Ford slapping the famous Mustang sporty car name on an SUV, let alone an electric one. But it has racked up several awards and tops many EV lists, and not just those for SUVs. What makes the Mustang Mach-E special?
What is the best electric SUV?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E could be the best electric SUV, thanks to the number of awards it has won. For example, the Mach-E won the American Automobile Association’s Best All Around award for 2022, Car and Driver’s Electric Vehicle of the Year in 2022, AutoGuide’s Utility of the Year award, and the AutoWeek Car Buyer’s award, according to Torque News. It’s also recommended by Consumer Reports.
However, its chief rival, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is this year’s Motorbiscuit EV/Hybrid of the Year. When you get in the new 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, it feels futuristic. It also has a large cargo area, up to 320 horsepower, and even earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. The Mach-E will also soon face competition from the new all-electric Chevy Blazer SUV.
How fast is the Mach-E Electric Mustang?
The Mach-E in GT Performance Edition trim can sprint to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, according to Ford. The Tesla Model Y, however, is slightly quicker with a 3.5 second blast to 60, according to Tesla. Other Teslas, like the Plaid edition, are much quicker, booking times of less than 2.0 seconds. But, sometimes being in the fastest electric SUV doesn’t mean you’re in the best electric SUV.
Ford Mustang Mach-Es start at $43,895 for the base Select with a standard range battery and all-wheel drive. The AAA-award winning Premium is a step up. Not only is the Premium more expensive, at $48,775, but you can make it more expensive with the extended range battery with 346 horsepower and 303 miles of range. It can be ordered with a B&O sound system, heated seats and steering wheel, and an upgraded interior.
Ford is ramping up Mach-E Electric Mustang SUV production
Ford is now seeing demand grow so quickly for the Mach-E that its ramping up production to hit 270,000 units a year. In December, it announced that it sold 150,000 Mustang Mach-E SUVs so far and that the model is key to it reaching an EV production rate of 600,000. For Ford, that shows its confidence in the Mustang Mach-E SUV. It now sells it in 38 countries. The model did set sales records earlier this year.
Can you drive the Mach-E in the cold?
Cold limits battery power in most EVs. Pre-conditioning your Ford EV’s battery can help. With most EVs, you can set a time that you want to drive and during the days of the week, so when you get in the car it’s already warm while it’s charging. That means you won’t have to use your battery power to heat up the car on a cold morning. With the Mach-E , and most electric vehicles, you can also set how much you want your vehicle to charge, and the temperature of the inside.
By pre-conditioning your electric car’s settings, for either hot or cold days, you can save battery power. But since it takes more juice to heat a car, turn on the heated seats, or to melt snow, in winter it can make a bigger difference.
