Subaru introduced its somewhat new Ascent model to compete with the larger trucks and SUVs that the South especially loves. The Ascent has earned recognition for its well-rounded performance. But there’s one question that might be on your mind: is the Subaru Ascent turbocharged?

What it’s like to drive the Subaru Ascent

Unlike a few of its siblings, the Ascent comes turbocharged. Subaru first launched the Ascent for the 2019 model year and recently unveiled the latest version for 2021. There are a few subtle differences between each model year, but all Ascent models have the same turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 260-hp. A continuously variable automatic is standard.

As Consumer Reports highlighted in its 2020 Ascent road test, this Subie is an all-around performer. CR felt that the Ascent drives smoother than some luxury cars do. In addition to its comfortable ride quality, you’ll also appreciate the Ascent for its off-roading capability.

The Ascent’s 8.7-inches of ground clearance, standard all-wheel-drive, plus hill descent control makes it capable enough for mild off-road adventures. What’s also great about the Ascent is that it returned 22 mpg overall in CR’s road test, which is on par with the class. This SUV drives peppier than you would expect, too.

“Don’t let the spec sheet mislead you. The turbo four-cylinder engine delivers ample motivation. However, initial take off can be a bit jumpy before drivers learn to finesse the gas pedal. We measured the 0-60 mph acceleration in eight seconds.”

Plenty of cabin comforts

Generally speaking, Subaru’s SUVs are pretty family-friendly. But if you have a larger brood, the Ascent is the Subie for you to get. The Ascent can seat up to eight people depending on the configuration you pick, and even its third-row is spacious.

Cloth upholstery comes with the Ascent, and spill-resistant cloth and leather upholstery are available as upgrades. Other available amenities include heated and cooled front seats and heated second-row seats. Additionally, the Ascent offers modern in-car that can make driving more enjoyable.

Ascent models all come with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. Optional features include a wifi hotspot, navigation, and a larger touchscreen. The Ascent also has lots of advanced safety functions such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a rear-seat reminder.

Should I buy a new or used Ascent?

Subaru’s Ascent has earned solid predicted reliability scores from CR. And so far, the 2019 model is standing the test of time. Based on CR’s data, the average price for a 2019 Ascent falls between $26,275 – $34,125.

If you’d rather have a brand-new Ascent, we understand. You may even be able to score a closeout deal on the current 2020 model, which begins at $31,995. The most significant change between the 2019 and 2020 models is the standard rear-seat reminder. For a few more advanced safety features, the 2021 version is worth a look.
