Is the Sequoia too old for the young people? Maybe, the current generation made its debut in 2008. It’s practically ancient. But the Toyota Tundra gets called old, too, and it’s getting a remodel for 2022.
According to Motor1, some rumors suggest that the 2022 Toyota Sequoia could be redesigned for the third generation. But these are just rumors. The renderings show a more modest-looking SUV with styling that’s borrowed from the Toyota RAV4.
We’ve heard about what to expect with the 2022 Toyota Tundra, but nothing about the new Sequoia. It’s possible that the new Sequoia could ride on the new Tundra’s platform. Also, a Toyota Grand Highlander is in the works. This nameplate could replace the Sequoia or Landcruiser.
What do we know about the new Toyota SUVs?
Unlike the Toyota Sequoia, the two new SUVs will offer electric drivetrains, which probably means they will have hybrid variants. They might also feature a hands-free driving system and a reverse parking system that your smartphone can control.
The SUVs will be aimed at active families, but the Sequoia can be pretty active too. One model is also expected to be bagged as a Lexus to provide a little extra luxury. Maybe that’s where the Grand Highlander will be.

What are a few potential Sequoia problems?
The 2021 Toyota Sequoia is still a great SUV. It’s an incredibly reliable option that could last forever, but its age may include a few drawbacks. For example, it has an MSRP of about $50,400. That’s a lot for a dinosaur.
You’ll get an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and up to 17 mpg on the highway with this massive beast. That feels like the opposite of being eco-friendly. But hey, the Sequoia comes with a stout 5.7-liter V8 engine with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque, so it’s not short on power.
It’s surprisingly agile and easy to park, despite being massive and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. The seats are large and supportive in each row, and wind noise is pretty suppressed.
But the tech feels outdated. The 7-inch touchscreen doesn’t look great. But at least Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard. The cabin materials feel old and outclassed compared to rivals too.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait to learn more about the fate of this beloved SUV. A new Tundra is coming, so that provides hope. Two new SUVs are coming as well.
