Is There a New Toyota Tundra for 2023?
Toyota debuted an all-new third generation of its full-size Tundra pickup truck for the 2022 model year. Therefore, the only new 2023 Toyota Tundra is the SX visual package on the SR5 trim. That said, this truck’s top-trim hybrid engine was not available until halfway through 2022. So 2023 will be the first full model year of the Tundra i-FORCE MAX and the corresponding hybrid-only TRD Pro and Capstone trim levels.
The 2023 Toyota Tundra SX boasts custom looks at an entry-level price
The absolute entry-level 2023 Toyota Tundra is the SR. But the first trim level without a detuned engine is the SR5. The 2023 Tundra SR5 starts at $42,470. The entry-level version features 2WD, a short four-door cab, and a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that makes 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
Every trim level of the third-generation Toyota Tundra features unique badging and even its own special grille. The 2022 Tundra SR5 was one of the plainer trims, but for 2023 Toyota is fixing this.
The optional Tundra SR5 SX package swaps the stock truck’s smoked chrome and body-colored badges and bright rims for dark gray metallic duds. Changes include the smokey dark gray metallic 18-inch rims, door badge delete, and black trim.
Even inside the SR5’s cab, its smoked silver trim is swapped out for black accents. You can order the SX package with any cab size and bed length Tundra SR5. But you can only pair it with white, Magnetic Gray metallic, Celestial Silver metallic, or Midnight Black metallic paint.
2023 will be the first full year of the Tundra Capstone trim and new TRD Pro
Toyota rolled out the long-awaited third generation of its full-size Tundra pickup truck for the 2022 model year. The automaker made headlines when it tossed its 5.7-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine in favor of a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6.
For its top-trim powertrain, Toyota cooked up a very special unit: the hybrid i-FORCE MAX. This powertrain sandwiches an electric motor capable of 184 lb-ft of torque between the V6 and ten-speed automatic. Paired with a 48-volt nickel battery beneath the rear seat, this electric motor adds regenerative braking. It can also launch the truck and accelerate to 18 mph with no help from the V6.
Toyota only had one problem: the i-FORCE MAX wasn’t ready for the 2022 model year. To make matters worse, the automaker had announced the its top-trim Tundra’s: the off-road-ready TRD Pro and new luxurious Capstone would only come with the powerful i-FORCE MAX engine.
The automaker’s solution was to only launch the new Tundra SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition at the start of the model year. When the i-FORCE MAX was ready for production, halfway through 2022, Toyota began filling orders for the above trims with the upgraded engine and for the TRD Pro and Capstone trims.
Any i-FORCE MAX Tundras on the road are either a 2022 and 1/2 model year truck or a 2023 truck. 2023 will be the first full model year of the new Tundra Capstone.
When will Toyota debut the fourth-generation Tundra pickup truck?
If you’ve already started the countdown to the next Tundra generation, you may have a while to wait. Toyota built the second-generation Tundra from 2007 through 2021. While the third-generation Tundra might not reign for 14 years, Toyota has announced no timeline to replace it.
In the meantime, we expect Toyota to replace its outdated Tacoma mid-size truck for the 2024 model year.
