Is There an AWD Camaro?
All-wheel drive (AWD) is a highly sought-after feature for modern car shoppers. After all, in some cases, it makes for effective power delivery and lightning-fast launches. Moreover, AWD allows vehicles to apply power more uniformly and overcome some of the effects of inclement weather, like rain-soaked roads. So, for the Chevrolet fans out there, does Chevy sell an AWD Camaro, or is it just RWD Camaros?
Is the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro AWD?
Unfortunately for Chevy Camaro fans, there is no 2022 Camaro with AWD. It’s not available as an option at any trim level. Instead, Chevrolet produces its muscle car with rear-wheel drive (RWD). That’s not necessarily a bad thing; a RWD application is better for spirited driving, with a tendency to kick the vehicle’s rear end out in tail-happy slides depending on driver input.
Are Camaros AWD or RWD?
Before looking for an older model to get that beloved acronym, save yourself some trouble. No factory-built Chevrolet Camaros are AWD. Instead, all Chevy pony cars are RWD, regardless of age. Even the fuel-saving four-cylinder trims like the 1LS and 1LT send power to the rear wheels rather than the front.
However, if you like driving your car enthusiastically, the Camaro’s RWD platform can put a smile on your face. Some V8-powered variants like the 1SS or the supercharged ZL1 produce mass quantities of horsepower with optional manual transmissions to make for eager driver’s cars and quarter-mile monsters. Of course, if you’re concerned about your Camaro’s performance in inclement weather, the V8-powered muscle cars might not be for you.
Is it hard to drive a Camaro?
Don’t fret if you want a Camaro; they’re no more difficult to drive than comparable muscle cars. The entry-level trims pack a 275-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an available 10-speed automatic transmission. That car is nowhere near as much of a handful as an LT1 or 1SS with 455 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission. However, TrueCar says that some of the more helpful driver aids are reserved for upper trim levels.
How can you make your Camaro better in bad weather?
If you want a Camaro, even a V8 Camaro, to make up for the lack of AWD, you can take a couple of measures. First, tires make more of a difference than you might expect; a good pair of winter or all-season tires can help your vehicle behave much better in inclement weather. Furthermore, you can drive your car carefully in unsightly conditions. Burying your foot might be fun with slippery surfaces, but it can easily result in a crash if you’re not careful.
Even though there’s no AWD Camaro, should you buy one?
If you want a Chevrolet Camaro, the lack of AWD shouldn’t stop you from buying one. Of course, your low-slung and maybe V8-powered RWD Camaro won’t fare as well in Alaska as in Southern California, but it’s manageable. However, if you want an AWD muscle car, consider a Dodge Challenger SXT or GT with their optional AWD. Still, you won’t be able to get one with a V8.
