The Honda S2000 CR is easily one of the best models that the brand ever built and its value has skyrocketed in the past decade. Honda originally only planned to build 699 copies of the S2000 CR from 2008 to 2009 and it looks like its rarity is paying off in spades. We recently came across this pristine example of a 2008 Honda S2000 CR with only 5,368 miles on the odometer and after ogling over its pictures, we were shocked at its listing price of $71,999. But is this fine example really worth paying over $70,000?

This Honda S2000 CR is one of the rarest finds

The 2008 Honda S2000 CR in question is being sold by Brooklyn Auto Sales over in Staten Island, NY. And while some might think they are crazy for even thinking about posting an S2000 CR at that astronomical price point, we think that a little research could be in order. For starters, the S2000 CR was priced at $36,300 when it was new and the current Kelley Blue Book value for this particular is around $35,000 when purchased from a dealer as opposed to a private party.

However, it’s too bad that the all-seeing and all-knowing KBB doesn’t dictate the market when it comes to rare Hondas. After all, as the ad for the car states, this Rio Yellow Pearl S2000 CR is only one of 140 ever produced in this color, so the term “rare” is an understatement. In that case, we can examine what other S2000 CR’s have been going for as of late.

Auctions value’s for the S2000 CR are somewhat steady

If we look at Bring A Trailer, which is a popular auction site for rare and pristine used cars, there have been many S2000 CR’s that have come and gone at really high prices, although it’s a little scattered. For example, this black 2008 CR with only 4,000 miles on it sold for $48,250 just a few months ago and this blue one with 9,000 miles sold for $56,000 last year. Those prices are significantly lower than the yellow CR that we’re examining, so its high pricing could be due to the exterior color.

We also found another Rio Yellow S2000 CR that sold for $76,500 a few months ago, but that one only had 1,000 miles on the clock and it was previously by American Honda Motors, which carries a lot of value in itself. That price seems a little more in line with what Brooklyn Auto Sales is asking for its S2000 CR, however, we did find another yellow CR that sold for $27,750 that had 98,000 miles on it along with some aftermarket wheels. The vast price differential seems to stem from not only the car’s rarity and color but also its showroom-stock condition.

Is this Rio Yellow S2000 CR really worth it then?

By looking at the different auctions prices and values, it’s safe to say that the 2008 S2000 CR in question could actually be worth its asking price, but maybe a little lower. We don’t blame them for pricing it so high, but we wouldn’t expect them to get the full amount that they want considering it likely wasn’t owned by Honda like the other one was and it has more miles. But, of course, they’re probably not expecting it to sell at that price either.

What makes the S2000 CR so great?

Just to recap, the Honda S2000 CR was built as the “Club Racer” version of the regular S2000 with the addition of a more aggressive front lip and spoiler, the deletion of the soft top and the addition of a hardtop, as well as more chassis, bracing for added rigidity. Honda also included stiffer springs and anti-roll bars in addition to a quicker steering rack to complete the track-friendly setup.

Again, only 699 in total were ever produced and this example is exceptional. While we wouldn’t personally pay that much for an S2000 CR, the sky-high price seems to be the going rate for them and we’re sure someone will eventually cough up the extra money for it.
