Is This Bio-Hybrid Pickup The Future Of Delivery Trucks?
What you’re looking at is a bit of a different mode of transportation. It’s meant to be a delivery vehicle but with a catch. The catch is that you have to put some of your own grunt into the propulsion. In other words, some peddling is required. This is the Bio-Hybrid PICK UP delivery van. Is this the future of trucks?
The Bio-Hybrid involves the driver peddling to extend the range
Probably not. The Bio-Hybrid involves the driver peddling to extend the range of the electric motor that is also part of the propulsion. So the driver can recharge it or if there is enough of a charge it can be powered by the battery. The power system is a portable lithium-ion battery. A second battery is optional which doubles the Bio-Hybrid’s range.
The Bio-Hybrids are equipped with road-legal lighting, roofs with windshields, windshield washers, and complete independent suspension. It is unclear if there are any safety provisions. There are some limitations involved that keep the safety aspects in context.
The Bio-Hybrid is made for congested urban downtown areas
Based on estimates by tflTruck, it looks like this is limited to 28 mph, so it is made for congested urban downtown areas. Cargo is probably limited to 500 lbs. So it is not much more beyond those three-wheel scooters you see in some Asian cities that have been used for years.
Designed in Germany, currently, three versions of the Bio-Hybrid will be available. The pickup box version, an enclosed box version more like a traditional delivery van, and one that can carry a paying passenger or companion. Called the “Duo,” this could possibly be like a personal taxi. Guesstimates on the box’s size are four-feet high, three-feet wide, and three-feet deep. No dimensions are offered on the company’s website.
Some European countries allow vehicles of this size on all bike paths. So that’s one big advantage. It also doesn’t require a driver’s license to drive it. And it doesn’t need to double park in business districts, it can pull right up to the front door of any commercial building. And the obvious advantages of being clean and quiet.
The Bio-Hybrid is digitally interconnected with a navigation system
With its dedicated app, it is digitally interconnected with a navigation system so you can’t get lost. It incorporates Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and 4G functionality. The app allows for functions initiated on smartphones or smartwatches. It also has tracking in case of theft.
Right now only customers in Europe will be able to purchase the Bio-Hybrid. It is unknown whether this will make it to the states. Prices start at around $13,500. Currently, the manufacturer is looking for investors before it begins full production.
