Equal parts off-road oddity and used market rarity, the Isuzu VehiCROSS has finally come back into the limelight. Enthusiasts are reminiscing on it and other weird Isuzu SUVs as we reach the 20-year nostalgia cycle. But you might be surprised if you check VehiCROSS prices online. The Isuzu VehiCROSS is a bit of a bargain.

What are Isuzu VehiCROSS prices like today?

According to the online car auction site Bring A Trailer, prices for VehiCROSS examples vary from around $10,000 to a bit under $20,0000 for nice examples.

The lowest price for a VehiCROSS auction on Bring A Trailer stopped at $7,350. It was a higher-mileage example with over 100,000 on the odometer. Understandably, as mileage goes down, prices go up. The highest price rose to $18,253 for a VehiCROSS with only 10,000 miles.

These are pretty attainable prices compared to other collectible off-roaders. It isn’t every day that you can snag a rare cult-classic 4×4 in good condition for about $15,000.

It’s worth noting, however, that these sales occurred a few years ago before the pricing spikes induced by the global pandemic. Classic off-road SUVs are hotter than ever on auction platforms. If there’s another VehiCROSS sale, it could very well go for a higher price than the current top bid.

How rare is the Isuzu VehiCROSS?

The Isuzu VehiCROSS is pretty rare, with less than 6,000 examples manufactured during its production run. By contrast, the Jeep Wrangler sold more than 200,000 units through the same timespan.

It came to the U.S. market and left just as quickly before we could truly appreciate its weird yet charming design or singular off-road capability.

Is it a good off-road SUV?

Isuzu designed the VehiCROSS to be a prodigiously capable off-roader.

As Car and Driver points out in its original 1999 review, the VehiCROSS has a specially-tuned suspension setup for high-speed off-road use. Think Baja racing or the Dakar Rally, and you’ll get a good idea of what the VehiCROSS can do.

Car and Driver says the setup works exceptionally well at higher speeds but less so for rock crawling. It’s a stiff suspension tuning to prevent the vehicle from bottoming out at speed. That stiffness can prevent more flexible articulation for slower, more technical trails. You’d likely have to push the VehiCROSS to pretty hard to find that limit, however.

Is the Isuzu VehiCROSS worth it?

Driving an Isuzu VehiCROSS offers plenty of excitement but could also have some drawbacks.

The VehiCROSS is as striking an SUV as they come, and it’s available at a manageable price for most enthusiasts. However, you might want to give a second thought to actually purchasing one.

Isuzu no longer sells passenger cars in the U.S. As a result, there’s no dealer network with certified Isuzu service or parts centers. Sourcing components and tracking down quality maintenance could be a hassle – especially for a vehicle that is already 25 years old.

On the other hand, the VehiCROSS is undoubtedly among the more unique SUVs ever sold stateside. Snag one, and you could be the toast of any Cars and Coffee event you visit.
