In a recent J.D. Power study, Nissan Murano owners were some of the most satisfied drivers. This crossover reportedly has the best ride and build quality and the highest overall appeal in the midsize SUV segment. J.D. Power editors added their own words of approval for the Murano’s affordable price point and aesthetic appeal.

The Murano joins the ranks of rivals like the Hyundai Palisade and Toyota 4Runner. Both tied for the best non-luxury upper midsize SUV. The Cadillac XT6, Lincoln Nautilus, Infiniti QX60, and BMW X6 were named the best midsize SUVs in the luxury segment. 

Other sources disagree about the 2022 Nissan Murano’s quality

While owners and J.D. Power were pleased with the 2022 Nissan Murano, some U.S. News reviewers share mixed feelings. In fact, this midsize SUV ranks near the bottom of the site’s non-luxury ratings. 

Both Car and Driver as well as CNET reported that the Murano’s handling makes it somewhat boring to drive. C/D and Autotrader also weren’t pleased with the continuously variable transmission’s noisy, inconsistent performance.

Although Edmunds was more forgiving about the Murano’s gearbox, testers still experienced performance issues during acceleration. Many critics also pointed out that the cargo capacity is below average for this segment. It provides 65 to 67 cubic feet total, depending on whether the model has a moonroof.

Who should buy a 2022 Nissan Murano?

The 2022 Nissan Murano has some flaws, but most critics say it doesn’t lack power. Every model packs a 260-hp V6 that can be optioned with all-wheel drive. Regardless of its drivetrain, this midsize SUV averages 20/28 mpg city/highway. 

Critics also agree that the Murano’s ride is comfortable enough to compensate for its lack of sportiness. C/D highlights the Platinum trim for its premium interior materials and plush semi-aniline leather seats. 

The range-topping Nissan Murano is also the only one with ventilated seats. Heated front seats are standard on the SV trim, and the SL also gets heated outboard passenger seats. While the cabin riders get more legroom, the backseat passengers benefit from reclining seats.

Higher Murano trims also benefit from premium features like a moonroof and Bose sound system. Reviewers had no problem navigating the infotainment interface, though some complained it could use an update. 

Most reviews still appreciate the abundant physical controls and standard smartphone integration. The Nissan Murano also has a long list of advanced driver-assistance features and competitive crash test scores.

Remember that automotive critics, who test hundreds of cars yearly, are more particular about the vehicles they recommend. Case in point: The Toyota 4Runner received an overwhelmingly positive reception from owners surveyed by J.D. Power. However, U.S. News says every other 2022 midsize SUV surpasses that model in overall quality. 

It’s also worth noting that any SUV segment is highly competitive, meaning the slightest flaw could send potential owners elsewhere.
