The Jaguar F-Type offers nearly everything most buyers want in a sports car. It boasts top-of-the-line tech, a sleek exterior, and, most important, high performance. However, Jaguar has issued a recall for thousands of 2020 F-Type models over a stability concern. If you recently purchased one, here’s what you need to know.

Safety and the 2020 Jaguar F-Type

Like many new vehicles these days, the Jaguar F-Type comes standard with many advanced safety features. They include automatic emergency braking, driver attention alerts, lane-keeping assistance, and forward-collision warnings. Other driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring, are standard on higher-level trims or can be purchased for the base model separately.

And though these controls are relatively easy to use, there’s a lot more to safety than alert systems. Organizations such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration evaluate vehicle safety holistically, examining everything from crashworthiness to ease of securing child seats.

Unfortunately, neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA conducted a safety assessment of the 2020 Jaguar F-Type. However, the NHTSA website shows an open recall regarding the 2020 Jaguar F-Type’s anti-lock braking system (ABS).

The Jaguar F-Type’s stability issues

According to the NHTSA, the 2020 Jaguar F-Type recall will begin May 7. The recall stems from an issue with these vehicles’ ABS. The system is designed to help a vehicle’s wheels from locking while braking. They help you retain better steering control over your vehicle when making sudden or hard stops or braking through sharp turns. ABS works in tandem with dynamic stability control systems. DSC is an automotive technology designed to identify when a vehicle loses traction and helps prevent it from skidding by applying brakes and reducing power until the driver regains control of the car.

So, here’s the issue with the 2020 model: Each Jaguar F-type automatically completes a diagnostic check of its ABS as the vehicle starts. But the diagnostic assessment might take longer than other concurrent processes needed to start the car. When the ABS diagnostic takes too long, the system could automatically disable the ABS and DSC. And without these crucial systems operational, the risk of a crash could increase.

The 2021 model remains unaffected

But don’t let the 2020 model’s recall dissuade you from considering a 2021 Jaguar F-Type if you’ve had your eye on one. The new F-Type appears to be clear of this issue. And it has everything you could want in a high-performance vehicle. Sitting on 18-inch wheels, the sharply styled F-Type comes in 30 exterior paint colors, Jaguar Boerne reports. And it doesn’t just look great; it also drives great.

The base-model Jaguar F-Type, the P300, is available as a coupe or convertible. In addition to offering multiple color choices, it comes with some great exterior features like rain-sensing wipers, LED headlights, and front and rear parking sensors. It packs a 2.0-liter inline-four engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Together, they produce 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. And it gets 23/30 mpg city/highway.

You’ll get 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space in the coupe but only 7.3 cubic feet in the convertible. However, both have power sports seats upholstered with suede and leather. And they have the same excellent technology features, including a 10-inch-touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, built-in navigation, a 10-speaker sound system, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.

As you upgrade to higher trim levels, you’re treated to more powerful engines and several additional cool features. The P380 R-Dynamic includes adaptive dampers and a limited differential, along with a 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. And the R P575, packing a 5.0-liter V8 producing 575 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, includes keyless entry, performance sport seats, and interior ambient lighting.

But when you look at everything the 2021 F-Type offers, you won’t find a recall notice for an ABS issue. You can breathe easily, knowing you aren’t putting yourself or your passenger at risk.
