Another wagon has bitten the dust, as the Jaguar XF Sportbrake has been discontinued. Luxurious, yet athletic, this high-octane station wagon won’t return to the U.S. for the 2021 model year.

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake was one of the last of its kind. However, Jaguar announced its updates to the 2021 Jaguar XF via a press release, and the Sportbrake body style was not among those listed in the lineup.

There weren’t too many wagons on the market to begin with, but the Jaguar XF Sportbrake was one of the more exciting options. It combined thrilling performance with deluxe amenities, making it a unique entry to the market.

Let’s take a look back at the short-lived Jaguar XF Sportbrake and analyze how its demise affects the landscape of station wagons in the U.S.

The Sportbrake wagon was more than just an elongated Jaguar XF. It offered more rugged capability, spaciousness, and convenience than its sedan counterpart.

Most drivers wouldn’t dare to take the Jaguar XF Sportbrake on an off-road excursion, unlike other wagons that are still being produced. However, it’s equipped with a standard all-wheel-drive system that gives it extra capability on slick roads or uneven terrain. Meanwhile, AWD is a pricey upgrade on the Jaguar XF.

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake also assists you more in your everyday life than the XF sedan. It has an incredible amount of cargo space – 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 69.7 cubic feet with the back seats folded down. That’s an incredible upgrade from the 19.1 cubic feet you’d get with the XF sedan.

This extra roominess allows for more versatility for hauling sporting equipment, luggage, shopping bags, and more. Additionally, this luxury wagon features a standard hands-free power tailgate for easy access to the cargo area.

The 2020 Jaguar XF Sportbrake offered two sporty available engines. It came standard with a 296-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, shoppers could choose the available 380-hp supercharged V6 for maximum exhilaration.

Do these attributes make the Jaguar XF Sportbrake feel more like an SUV rather than a traditional rugged station wagon? Perhaps, but that’s part of its charm. Nevertheless, drivers still enjoy the lower driving height and the distinct styling of a station wagon with the Sportbrake.

Wagons aren’t going away any time soon

It isn’t all doom and gloom for station wagon fans. There are still several options being produced this year, including the popular Subaru Outback. Meanwhile, several all-new wagons will debut during the 2021 model year.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain enters the fray as an exciting option for old-school station wagon aficionados. This model has already been to Europe, and now it is set for a U.S. roadshow as it replaces the outgoing E-Class wagon.

Meanwhile, Audi just introduced a pair of new wagons – the 2021 Audi A6 Allroad and the 2021 Audi RS6 Avant. The A6 Allroad figured to be a capable off-roader while the RS6 Avant delivers high-performance thrills.

A fond farewell to the Jaguar XF Sportbreak

Saying goodbye to the Jaguar XF Sportbreak is bittersweet. The wagon offers car-like handling and performance while still giving you the quality and safety of an SUV. While there are still other wagons on the market that are comparable in style, nothing will quite fill the void left behind by this unique model.

The Jaguar XF’s short-lived stint has certainly left its mark. Hopefully, we will see more innovative designs in the station wagon class from Jaguar in the future.
