The Jaguar I-Pace, its first EV, has a storied past that has been mostly obscured as production continues into its sixth year. Many software issues, a lack of dealer technicians, and questions about its advertised range plagued the first couple of years of production. But the Jaguar caché and great styling have helped it soldier on. Now, another chapter has begun, with Jaguar announcing the recall of every I-Pace in the U. S. over fire risks.

How many Jaguar I-Pace EVs are involved in the recall?

This means every I-Pace from 2018 through the current model (June 5, 2018, to May 25, 2023) is part of this recall. While a small number at 6,367 vehicles, this in itself shows that in spite of Jaguar’s reputation, and the small number of EVs it is responsible for, it is having problems as it continues its march towards full electrification. 

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records show that investigations into multiple incidents of I-Pace fires began in February 2022. Thermal overload is the suspect, prompting Jaguar Land Rover to have the battery supplier, LG, help with the analysis. As you may recall, LG was part of the Chevrolet Bolt battery fiasco where every Bolt built was recalled to replace fire-prone batteries. Sound familiar?

Are there any accident or injury reports with this recall?

The NHTSA says that so far there are reports of eight instances of I-Pace fires. As of now, neither Jaguar Land Rover nor LG has determined what’s causing the fire events. In spite of this, Jaguar engineers have developed a software change.

The update centers on the battery energy control module. This software will limit charging to 75% should certain parameters go in the wrong direction. We’ll assume one of these parameters will be battery temperature. Owners will see a warning message so as to get them over to your Jaguar dealer for technicians to investigate any issues. 

What happens if Jaguar I-Pace owners see a warning light?

In the extreme, the dealer will replace the battery and module under warranty. However, some battery and control modules have already seen replacements at the owner’s expense before this recall. Jaguar will now reimburse those owners. Jaguar says there are no reports of accidents or injuries related to these latest findings.

A Jaguar recall earlier this year was for pedestrian warning sound problems. There were also two other I-Pace recalls, one in 2019 for regenerative brake failures, and another in 2020 for defective front seat frames compromising their integrity.
