Jeep Gladiator Towing Capacity: How the Jeep Truck Stacks Up to the Competition
Based on the Wrangler, the Gladiator is perfect for off-roaders — and it’s Jeep’s first truck in almost 30 years. The 2020 Jeep Gladiator includes an advanced all-wheel drive system, sturdy suspension, and large off-road tires. Its features are destined to set it apart from other mid-size trucks. But how does its towing capacity fare against rival brands like the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Ford Ranger?
2020 Jeep Gladiator overview
The Gladiator is fitted with a V6 3.6-liter engine that has 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a manual six-speed transmission, but buyers have the option of an automatic eight-speed transmission, too. Going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about seven seconds, the 2020 Gladiator is slightly slower than rival mid-size trucks. However, Jeep plans to eventually add a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that produces 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque.
While every trim has a touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are only included in the 7- and 8.4-inch displays. Front-seat passengers have access to several power points.
On top of this, the vehicle’s seats can be stowed in many ways and locked securely in place for treacherous trails. Speaking of treacherous, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator comes with several safety features, including a front-facing camera, blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert.
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator’s towing capacity
The Gladiator’s towing capacity is one of the best in its category. The 2020 model has the ability to tow up to 7,650 pounds. On top of that, it’s payload allows it to carry a load of up to 1,600 pounds.
One of the things that set the Gladiator’s towing capacity apart is its included features. The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is fitted with a Class IV trailer hitch, wide axles, integrated brake controller for the trailer, a 4.10 gear ratio for the rear axle, and a hitch view camera.
How does the Gladiator compare to the rest
In terms of payload capacity, the Ford Ranger leads the pack. The truck can carry 1,860 pounds, 260 pounds more than the Gladiator can carry. Most of the other leading options in the mid-size truck category have a payload capacity closer to the 1,500-pound range.
When it comes to towing, the Gladiator is among the best in the mid-size truck category. With a fully equipped Ford Ranger, you’ll only be able to get a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. Only the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado has a better towing capacity.
The Colorado has three engine options with different towing capacities. The standard four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine can tow 3,500 pounds, and the 2.8-liter option comes with a 7,000-pound towing capacity. On the other hand, the V6 3.6-liter option can tow up to 7,700 pounds, making it slightly better than the Gladiator’s 7,650 pounds.
When it comes to the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, the V6 engine and manual transmission provide decent performances. Its four-wheel-drive options have a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds. The rear-wheel-drive options are slightly better at 6,800 pounds. Though the Tacoma’s towing capacity is lower than those previously mentioned, it’s still respectable.
Drivers desire a lot from a pickup truck. Reliability, durability, and a good interior are some of these things. However, a truck’s payload and towing capabilities are crucial. This may explain the efforts Jeep put into ensuring the 2020 Gladiator is among the best in both areas.
