The Jeep Grand Cherokee Is Finally Getting More Power
Stellantis is making a significant EV push, but that doesn’t mean gas-powered engines are done. The Jeep Grand Cherokee will soon fill the need for speed again. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee could come at you with tornado power.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is gaining inline-six power
Rumors suggest that the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is getting inline-six power. It could be the Tornado engine, and we speculate that it’s based on the hurricane engine. According to Auto Evolution, it powers the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe.
The same engine is expected to power the upcoming Jeep Gladiator 4xe. The Hurricane is a turbocharged inline-four engine that’s paired with two electric motors to crank out 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
The Tornado could be built for the two-row Grand Cherokee. Reportedly, the six-cylinder option could be paired with 48-volt electrification and a ZF 8HP with a built-in electric motor. Stellantis ordered tons of hybrid transmissions from ZF Friedrichshafen in 2019.
But the most potent ZF 8HP is the plug-in hybrid 8HP80PH, with only provides up to 215 hp. As a mild hybrid, it could drop by 36 hp.
How much power does the Grand Cherokee have?
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine for 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. The Tornado could replace the HEMI.
Also, the HEMI is available with the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, so it main gain the Tornado engine as well. It could be beneficial to replace the HEMI with a lighter and more efficient option.
The Grand Cherokee gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and up to 26 mph on the highway. The Grand Wagoneer receives an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and up to 22 mpg on the highway.
Spy shots of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a longer wheelbase have been spotted. Perhaps the new engine will power the even larger beast.
We’re also waiting on a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk to emerge. The 2021 model has 707 hp and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds. The regular Jeep Grand Cherokee can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds.
