Jeep Grand Wagoneer: How Much Storage Is Behind the Back Row?
Nobody expected the Jeep Grand Wagoneer to blow up in popularity when it debuted as a trim level for the original Wagoneer. It was an upscale version, notable for its exterior woodgrain trim inspired by station wagons. Still, even that couldn’t save it from extinction in the early ’90s.
Chrysler reintroduced the Grand Wagoneer as a Grand Cherokee model, but it was met with a less-than-stellar reception. But its 2022 reincarnation as a full-size luxury SUV is much more appealing. And one of this vehicle’s biggest highlights is its boatload of storage.
But first: How much power are we talking?
Large SUVs need to carry plenty of cargo and passengers without feeling too slow, so a potent powertrain is essential. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer looks good on paper with a 471-hp V8, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also comes with standard all-wheel drive and 10 inches of ground clearance.
It can traverse water up to two feet deep and offers an adaptive air suspension. On civilized roads, it can drive smoother than many other Dodge relatives due to its independent rear suspension. However, Car and Driver reports that the wonky steering and noticeable body roll don’t inspire driver confidence.
So, how much luggage can the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer carry?
Driving manners aside, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s sheer size makes it more impressive than rivals. Measuring almost 18 feet long, it’s larger than the Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalade. It also boasts over 27 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row.
As any three-row SUV owner knows, the last row is typically not adult-friendly. Trying to pile in a lot of cargo with every seat upright is also a challenge.
Autoblog put that to the test by throwing in two roller suitcases, each measuring 26 inches long and 16 inches wide. Two smaller roller suitcases were piled on top, each 24 inches long and 15 inches wide. The tester also threw in one small rolling suitcase and an overnight bag.
Once the Grand Wagoneer was loaded, the liftgate shut with no extra pushing or luggage reorganizing needed. Even better, there was still a decent amount of space for the driver to see the road when looking over their shoulder. Also, there were still a few free inches on the load floor before meeting the scuff plate.
In addition, Autoblog said the third row is incredibly spacious, comfortably seating even taller adults. If you’d rather fold that row down, you’ll gain access to 71 cubic feet of storage space. On top of all that, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer also has a maximum towing capacity of 9,860 pounds.
The only downside is that the liftgate doesn’t open as high as liftgates on similar SUVs. Plus, the power liftgate button is inside rather than outside, making it difficult to access when the cargo bay is full.
Other interesting features in the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasts one of the most advanced center stacks on the market. A 12-inch screen sits atop a 10-inch screen that controls the HVAC settings. Higher trims can have an additional touchscreen for the front passenger and a rear-seat entertainment system. Each back seat can be lowered and raised with the simple push of a button.
The Jeep Grand Wagoneer isn’t cheap, ranging from $88,440 to $104,845 to start. Still, it’s one of the better SUVs if you want luxury without sacrificing cargo space.
