There have been many teases of the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer for weeks. This morning, Jeep finally formally announced that Wagoneer would be a portfolio of premium SUVs. The company aims to infuse that portfolio of products with an opulent luxury feel. Wagoneers will be Jeeps like no other.

Taking a shot at Cadillac

In a shot across the bow of the Cadillac Escalade, the new Wagoneer portfolio of products was introduced as SUVs to meet the need that has not been filled by American luxury SUV manufacturers since the Grand Wagoneer disappeared decades ago. The Grand Wagoneer will be the first product in the portfolio. The Wagoneer will come later.

The Grand Wagoneer

The Grand Wagoneer will see production begin next year. The full-size, four-door SUV is a plug-in electric hybrid motivated vehicle. Additionally, Jeep aims to have many sustainable materials as part of the big Jeep’s makeup.

The Grand Wagoneer presentation went on to emphasize that even though there is a focus on luxury appointments, the new model will still be able to pull and climb. To that end, it will offer a choice of three 4×4 systems, will have an air-lift suspension and independent front and rear suspensions. Towing will be up to 10,000 lbs.

Grand Wagoneer will provide refined sophistication

The idea behind the Grand Wagoneer is to provide a refined sophistication for consumers that would be at ease in the finest golf-courses while still enjoying traveling to camp or go fishing. In fact, the speculation insinuates that the Grand Wagoneer may be geared more for the Land Rover and Bentayga consumer than the Escalade buyer. This may be Jeep’s attempt to leapfrog Cadillac altogether.

The Wagoneer (sans the Grand)

The Wagoneer model, sans the “Grand” in the moniker, will be introduced at a later time next year. Other than that quick blurb about it coming later to the portfolio of Jeep premium SUV products, there really was not much else disclosed about it. So, we will have to continue waiting for more information. Could it be a strip down shorter version? Or, could it be something entirely different?

Both new SUVs will be built in the Detroit area

Both models, will be built in the new Mack plant in the Detroit area. That plant is currently being built. There will be 6,500 people employed there once completed.

Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer bring hope

Overall, this is an exciting time for Jeep fans. A new full-size vehicle is something that has been absent for far too long from the line-up. The return of the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer nameplates bring hope that the Jeep name will reclaim lost territory given up when the models first shuttered years ago. Now, Jeep’s full-size luxury is back, and it brings with it another excuse to take the scenic road. It is just a matter of waiting for the entire portfolio to come into clarity. Until then, we will have to entertain ourselves with promotional pictures.
