The Grand Cherokee is the most popular Jeep model, and its sales figures are proof. The automaker sold 124,957 units in the first half of 2023. The Jeep SUV started the year strong, with 17,928 units sold in January. It saw a slight dip in February, with 17,211 units, but things picked up in March, with 19,363 units.

The Grand Cherokee experienced yet another sales increase in April, with 23,790 units. But in May, the number dropped slightly to 22,875. But the Jeep SUV regained its ground in June by selling 23,790 units. The Grand Cherokee also saw an uptick in Q2 2023 sales, with 70,455 units delivered. That represents an 18.9% increase over the 59,253 units sold in Q2 2022.

In comparison, the Cherokee compact SUV sold only 6,006 units in Q2 2023, a 35% decline from the 9,279 units in 2022. But the Compass, another small crossover from Jeep, saw a 28%, with 28,084 units sold in Q2 2023, compared with 21,926 in Q2 2022.

The Wrangler is the automaker’s second most popular model, but its Q2 2023 sales weren’t impressive. It sold 46,671 units, a 13% decline from the 53,945 units sold in Q2 2022.

The Grand Wagoneer is the least popular Jeep, selling 3,225 units in Q2 2023, versus the equally modest 3,932 in 2022. The large SUV already isn’t doing well sales-wise, but its 17% drop since Q2 2022 indicates a bigger problem.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts comprehensive crash tests and evaluates safety technologies, vehicle design, and other factors to assess how well cars protect occupants in real-world collisions. The nonprofit updated its safety rating criteria for the 2023 model year. This update states that for a vehicle to earn a Top Safety Pick+, it must earn “Good” ratings in every crash test.

The tests include the passenger’s and driver’s side small overlap front tests, updated side tests, and original moderate overlap front tests. Headlights must also earn an Acceptable or Good rating. In addition, the car’s front crash prevention system should earn Advanced or Superior ratings in nighttime and daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

The only subpar rating comes from the effectiveness of its headlights, which received a range of Poor, Marginal, and Good ratings depending on the Grand Cherokee trim.
