We don’t know what it is about Jeep, but especially this year, it has had a tough time selling vehicles. Sales are way down in 2023, from the Gladiator pickup to the entire lineup. The problem isn’t the Ford Bronco because it only competes with the Wrangler. But now Stellantis has canned the Jeep CEO. So what does that mean for buyers looking for big Jeep discounts? 

We already told you about the up to $20,000 off the list price of a 2023 Gladiator pickup. While sales of the Gladiator in 2023 have been slow, they’re not much worse than other Jeep models. So, right off the bat, we should be seeing similar discounts for the rest of the Jeep lineup. But let’s look at Jeep’s pickup first.

Jeep is offering discounts to sell Gladiators

So far, 18,000 2023 Gladiator trucks are clogging up inventories. Dealers have leeway because there have been two manufacturer discounts as of this month. Plus, Cars Direct found that dealers are adding their own incentives to move the metal. 

From now through October 2nd, Jeep is cutting 10% off MSRP. Whether you lease or buy, it is the same 10% discount. Other states, like California, see an extra 15% off, so check your state and those around you to see if it applies. 

And just because you see big discounts once you’re at the dealership doesn’t mean there aren’t still more. Some dealers have 50 to 100 2023 Gladiators and maybe more. So they’re doing everything they can to move them out, including sweetening the deal.

Jeep sales are down across the board

The Gladiator sold 77,875 units in 2022, according to carfigures. For 2023, through August, it has only sold 27,326. So, at best, it’s on pace to have a 50,000 sales year. Now, compare that to the Wrangler.

Wrangler sales in 2022 were 181,410, while this year, through August, it’s around 115,000. Figuring around 12,000 will sell each month through the end of 2023 puts Wrangler sales down around 20,000 vehicles compared to 2022. 

Wagoneer sales in 2022 were 36,221, according to Goodcarbadcar. As of August 2023, they’re at 13,636. So, we’re seeing a percentage decrease similar to the Gladiator, which is about a third less. And finally, for the Cherokee, it sold 40,322 in 2022. Averaging sales through June of 2023, we can speculate it selling about half the number sold last year.

Is it still worth waiting for 2024 Jeep models?

Why show you the sales numbers? Because we have the Gladiator as a model for what Jeep must do to crank up the sales for the rest of its lineup. All numbers are down appreciably from 2022, with only three months left in 2023.
