We hope you’re prepared because the Jeep Wagoneer could rock you like a hurricane. Seriously, the Jeep Wagoneer and other large vehicles from Jeep, Ram, and Dodge are about to be enhanced with the new Hurricane inline-six engine.

The Jeep Wagoneer gains Hurricane engine power

While Stellantis has been putting a primary focus on electrification, some options like the Jeep Wagoneer, Ram 1500, Dodge Durango, and more could benefit from an all-new 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine for the decades.

According to MotorTrend, the Hurricane refers to a new family of twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engines. Standard output (SO) and high-output (HO) versions are ready for production.

Stellantis boasts that the standard output Hurricane will provide over 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque at a max of 5,800 RPM.

The high output option will provide over 500 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque at up o 6,100 RPM according to the initial configurations. Engineers suggest that the new engines maintain at least 90 percent of peak torque from 2,350 to redline.

These figures are on par with the beloved HEMI, so it might be nervous. It looks like the aging HEMI lineup found a suitable replacement. Also, hybrid hurricane variants are planned but won’t be available at launch.

Will the Hurricane engine help the Wagoneer?

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is currently available with a 5.7-liter V8 engine with 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque. This is a stout amount of power, but the new Hurricane engine would bump up the muscle and fun.

Plus, the Wagoneer could become more efficient. Stallentis claims the SO variant has 15 percent less CO2 than larger displacement engines. The HO option produces 13 percent less. There is also room for a particulate filter, but it won’t be equipped unless it’s required.

The block is lightweight cast aluminum, and plasma transfer wire arc tech was employed to spray vaporized steel alloy on each cylinder. This strong coating provides 10 times the wear resistance of the traditional coating, and it’s 50 percent thinner.

It saves three pounds per engine block. The SO weighs about 430 lbs, and the Ho is up to 441 lbs. Both are lighter than the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine.

Plus, the Hurricane features a DOHC design with direct injection and individual cooling systems separate from the engine cooling circuit. The structural oule pan with a pump can circulate oil during extreme driving conditions too.

When will we learn more about the Hurricane engine?

We could see the Jeep Wagoneer, Ram 1500, Dodge Durango, and more equipped with a new Hurricane engine soon. Test units are already available from the Saltillo North engine plant in Ramos, Arizpe, Coahuila, Mexico.

Full production could begin in the next few months, and April is an excellent time for new vehicle information to be revealed. The New York Auto Show and Easter Jeep Safari are significant events for new concepts, trims, engines, and more.

Also, the plant can produce about 250,000 new Hurricane engines per year. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the Jeep Wagoneer and other large vehicles.
