Jeep is known for its unique, rugged vehicles, including the resurrected Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Earlier this month, automakers released sales numbers for the first quarter of 2022. General Motors reported sales declined 20% since Q1 of last year. But GM fared better than Nissan, whose sales decreased 30%. In addition, Honda sales dropped 23%, and Toyota sales were down 15%. 

Here’s the interesting part: Jeep sales were down only 2%. That’s thanks to the all-new Wagoneer and updated Grand Cherokee. Plus, the less expensive Wagoneer is outselling the Grand Wagoneer by two-to-one. What’s going on?

Shortages, slumping sales, and the Jeep Wagoneer’s domination over the Grand Wagoneer

The auto industry is still reeling from parts shortages. According to a recent Stellantis report, 2022 Q1 sales for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) were down compared with the first-quarter sales of 2021.

In the report, Jeep sales were nearly even with the same quarter in 2021. It was the best Q1 ever for the Grand Cherokee, with sales up 36% and retail sales up 44%. Compass sales were up in the U.S. by 22% and saw a year-over-year retail sales increase of 23%.

In addition, the Jeep Wagoneer outsold the Grand Wagoneer by two-to-one. Jeep sold 7,055 Wagoneer units in Q1, compared with 3,169 Grand Wagoneer units.

Value vs. luxury

The price difference between the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is eye-catching. While the Wagoneer starts at around $60,000, the Grand Wagoneer starts at almost $30,000 more. But both of these full-size SUVs take up a lot of room on the road.

Under the Wagoneer’s hood sits a 5.7-liter V8 engine producing 392 hp. The Grand Wagoneer packs a standard 6.4-liter V8 harnessing 471 horses. Though the Grand Wagoneer offers plenty, inflation and the higher prices that come with it have Americans keeping a closer eye on their spending.

Under the circumstances, consumers aren’t willing to make a considerable financial investment in a vehicle. They’ll go with the smaller sticker price instead of the luxury and convenience features that are nice to have but not necessary.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer vs. 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer: Overall comparison

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer brings back a famous nameplate from the past, and the two SUVs are mechanically similar. They are large SUVs with three spacious rows of seating — ideal for families. They’ll provide stiff competition for the Nissan Armada, Ford Expedition, Chevy Suburban, and Chevy Tahoe, Car and Driver reports.

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer provides power, a refined ride, and a 10,000-pound towing capacity. Its interior is nice, with as many as five available displays, including one just for the front passenger. Starting at $60,995, this SUV is loaded with great tech features. 

In addition, the Wagoneer is well-equipped with rear-wheel drive standard. You can also get one of the available four-wheel-drive systems. And an optional air suspension and off-road kit enhances the SUV’s off-road prowess.

With standard four-wheel drive and a stout powertrain, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasts off-road chops, a rugged yet refined exterior, and all the luxury and convenience features you’d expect from a large SUV.

The Grand Wagoneer also wades into the upscale arena with a posh interior. It provides plenty of passenger space and numerous high-tech features to keep everyone connected and entertained.

The Grand Wagoneer also has all the driver assists you’d expect from a $90,000 SUV. Like the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer can tow up to 10,000 pounds. However, its size makes maneuvering cumbersome. It also doesn’t get impressive fuel numbers, especially troubling in light of recent gas prices.

When economic conditions improve, can the Grand Wagoneer outsell the cheaper Wagoneer? It’s doubtful. But only time will tell.
