The Wrangler is one of the most popular SUVs in America. The Jeep off-road SUV checks most boxes for people looking for a daily driver, an off-roader, and more. In addition, appealing features like a removable soft top make it irresistible. However, did you know there are alternatives other than the new Ford Bronco that check many of the same boxes? Plus, it’s almost impossible to buy a 2022 Jeep Wrangler at MSRP because of the current new vehicle market. Here are three great Jeep Wrangler alternatives that aren’t a Ford Bronco.

Why do you need a Jeep Wrangler alternative?

If you’re in the market for a 2022 or 2023 Jeep Wrangler, good luck. Not only are Wrangler models selling out at a rapid pace, but it’s also one of the most marked-up vehicles in the automotive market. This is a result of its immense popularity, which allows dealers to charge as much as they want. Since you can’t get a new Wrangler anywhere else, what choice do you have?

Additionally, many reviewers consider the 2022 Jeep Wrangler as one of the lowest-rated midsize SUVs. We don’t expect much to change for the 2023 model year. Although it’s a capable off-road machine and the removable top makes it desirable, its on-road performance leaves much to be desired. That’s why choosing some of these alternatives is better for those searching for a daily driver with some off-road chops.

The Toyota 4Runner is a great Wrangler alternative

If there’s one place Jeep models fall short, it’s reliability. Anyone searching for a long-lasting, reliable SUV usually turns to the 4Runner or Toyota in general. As a result, the Toyota 4Runner is widely regarded as an off-road SUV that’s luxurious on the road. Moreover, it’s well-known for lasting well into the six-figure mark on its odometer. As Wheels Inquirer pointed out, both the 4Runner and Wrangler top the charts regarding resale value.

Buying the 4Runner TRD trim levels grants owners access to plenty of off-road capability. For example, TRD Off-Road trims have additional drive settings for off-roading, a locking rear differential, and an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System that improves wheel articulation. Next, the more costly TRD Pro model has an off-road suspension with Fox dampers, TRD wheels, all-terrain tires, a unique front skid plate, and a TRD roof rack.

A Land Rover Defender is a costly option

Unfortunately, anything you buy from Land Rover will be pretty expensive. On the bright side, it’ll be luxurious and, in the Defender’s case, off-road capable. Although it starts just under $50,000, the highest trim level in the Defender lineup costs $113,675. Fortunately, the expensive but powerful 5.0-liter eight-cylinder engine makes 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to squash even the best Wrangler competition.

Furthermore, the Land Rover Defender X trim is the cheapest version of the Defender that gains off-roading equipment. For example, an adjustable air suspension, Terrain Response 2, All-Terrain Progress Control, an active electronic differential, and a configurable powertrain, steering, differentials, and traction control settings. Moving up to the V8 trim costs more than six figures minimum but adds things like quad exhaust pipes, a shockproof/waterproof activity key, and advanced tow assist.

Buy a Jeep Gladiator instead of a Wrangler

The final and possibly best Jeep Wrangler alternative is nearly its equivalent. The 2022 Jeep Gladiator is essentially the midsize pickup truck version of the off-road SUV. Moreover, it shares a lot of the same equipment and styling cues as its midsize SUV sibling. It might be worth checking in on the Gladiator if you’re in love with the Wrangler but don’t want to overpay for dealer prices.

Experts like Edmunds recommend jumping up to the Gladiator Rubicon. Starting at $50,705, the first off-road-oriented Gladiator has a 4.10 rear axle ratio for increased towing and off-road capability. Next, it offers 33-inch all-terrain tires, fenders with increased clearance, locking front/rear differentials, an electronically disconnecting front stabilizer bar, Fox shock absorbers, body-protecting rock rails and skid plates, a special two-speed transfer case, and upgraded cloth upholstery.

Jeep Wrangler alternatives that aren’t a Ford Bronco

In conclusion, the 2022 and 2023 Jeep Wrangler are some of the most exciting off-road vehicles available. Unfortunately, its popularity results in dealer markups and prices for the midsize SUV that isn’t worth paying. That’s why getting your hands on a new Wrangler at MSRP is nearly impossible. Replacing one with a Ford Bronco is an easy answer, but those are even more challenging to find. The Toyota 4Runner, Land Rover Defender, and Jeep Gladiator are the best Jeep Wrangler alternatives that aren’t a Ford Bronco.
