For Jeep Wrangler fans or Jeep fans in general, it’s an excellent time of year. It’s time for updates and teasers about what’s coming out, including the Jeep Wrangler EV. But will the electric Wrangler have enough power to win traditional Wrangler owners over? 

How much power does the 2024 Jeep Wrangler EV have? 

Official specs for the 2024 Jeep Wrangler EV haven’t been released, but plenty of rumors and teasers suggest that it’s on the way. It’s the next logical step after seeing the Jeep Wrangler 4xe dominate the wild. 

Plus, we’ve seen the Magneto and Magneto 2.0 climbing over rocks in Moab, Utah, during the past two Easter Jeep Safaris. This means that Jeep has been working on electric Wranglers and certainly taking the idea seriously. 

But the Magneto only provides 285 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The standard Wrangler engine is a 3.6-liter V6 option with 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. So, it barely beats it. 

However, the Magento 2.0 has an upgraded motor and an 800-volt architecture to crank out 625 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. This sounds great, and Jeep says the Magneto 2.0 can reach 60 mph in about 2.0 seconds. That’s crazy fast, but what’s the range or towing capacity? 

How capable is the Wrangler EV? 

The Jeep Wrangler EV will need to keep up with the cream of the crop, such as the gas-powered Rubicon and Wrangler 4xe. It will need enough power and range to tow at least 3,500 lbs like its hybrid and gas-powered siblings. 

Larger electric SUVs like the Rivian R1S can tow up to 7,700 lbs and can climb up almost vertical rock faces in Moab. The adjustable air suspension can increase the ground clearance to 14.9-inches. 

Also, the R1S is currently only available with the quad-motor AWD setup and larger battery pack. It cranks out up to 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque. The 600-hp dual-motor setup will be available later. 

With the larger battery, the R1S has an EPA-estimated range of about 316 miles on a full charge. It has a 135-kWh battery pack, while the Wrangler 4xe has a 14-kWh battery pack. It has up to 21 miles of electric range. 

Jeep is already placing electric chargers at trailheads to alleviate some range anxiety. But towing can cut the Rivian’s R1S charge by about 50 percent, and the Lightning isn’t making it very far with a trailer. 

The Jeep Wrangler EV will also need its battery to hold a charge at higher altitudes and in colder climates. 

When will we learn more about the Wrangler EV? 

We could hear more about the Jeep Wrangler EV in a few weeks. But Jeep is expected to share more about the Jeep Gladiator 4xe and possibly the Renegade 4xe. However, Stellantis is launching an electric Dodge Challenger soon. 

Its two most powerful motors are slotted for the large STLA platform, for large EVs. It can support up to 800 hp. But it’s only one of four new BEV platforms. 

If Stellantis isn’t ready to release an electric Wrangler to tackle the R1S, perhaps we will see a two-door model first. Then it could be followed by a more robust four-door option. We will keep an eye out for the latest updates.
