Many of us pick a career and don’t have a backup plan in case it doesn’t work out. Jerry Seinfeld didn’t fall into that category and actually had plans to join the automotive field if his dreams of becoming an actor didn’t work out. However, his career took off and now he uses his love for automobiles to fuel his car collection.

Jerry Seinfeld has a huge car collection

Seinfeld may not work officially in the automotive industry, but his love for cars is undeniable. All you need to do is look at his massive car collection to see that his passion hasn’t faded since his acting career picked up.

While he doesn’t have as many cars as Jay Leno, Seinfeld still has a respectable selection. Many of them are Porsches, such as a 1949 Porsche 356, worth over $700,000, and was one of the first 959s to be produced. He also owns a 1983 Porsche 959, which is illegal to drive in the U.S. because Porsche didn’t build enough models to submit for all the testing vehicles must go through to be street legal. 

Other vehicles in his collection include a 1971 Ferrari 365 Daytona. Many of the cars Seinfeld calls his own are now worth over a million dollars. 

It’s a writer’s life for me

On top of being a talented comedian, Seinfeld is also a writer. People report that if his career in acting hadn’t gone anywhere, he wanted to be a writer for an automotive magazine.

Seinfeld had a talent for it because he won an award for an automotive article he wrote in 2003. He’s so proud that Seinfeld has it displayed on a wall in his home.

Other items on his wall include a giant U.S. postage stamp. It was designed to commiserate his most well-known role on the sitcom Seinfeld. The other is a picture of Seinfeld performing at the White House. It was for President Barack Obama and Paul McCartney.

The backup plan, should Seinfeld have needed to follow it, was to bring some humor to automotive magazines. This didn’t happen, but it does make one wonder what types of articles Seinfeld could have produced if he had. They would doubtless have had readers in stitches.

Seinfeld still has a career in the automotive industry

Even though Seinfeld never fully explored a career in writing, he’s still a part of the automobile industry in a different way. He now stars in a car show called Comedians Getting Coffee in Cars. 

The show is exactly what it sounds like. Seinfeld introduces a comedian who owns or showcases a vintage car. Seinfeld and the celebrity then drive to a restaurant where they enjoy coffee. The show would often go off script as they visited places that happened to catch their eye or chat it up with strangers on the street.

The show started on Crackle, but it became so big it soon moved to Netflix. You can still see it on Netflix. 

It now appears that Seinfeld is ready to move on from Comedians Getting Coffee in Cars. He hasn’t specifically said that it’s over, but he doesn’t seem very enthusiastic about it going forward.

As far as Seinfeld returning to acting in a sitcom, he says that’s not going to happen. People reported that Seinfeld was on The Howard Stern Show when he stated, “I don’t like seeing old people on TV. I don’t want to inflict myself on people in a deteriorated state.”

So what’s next? We’ll have to wait and see.
