Just How Safe Are the Top 15 2022 Midsize SUVs?
The top 15 midsize SUVs are, as you might expect, pretty great. They offer a combination of reliability and value. iSeeCars, an organization which compiled a list of the best vehicles by category, used reliability, value retention, and safety to determine just how a great the best midsize SUVs are. Yet not all vehicles have safety scores. Let’s take a look at why not, and also at just how safe the SUVs with safety scores are.
To come up with the list of the best midsize SUVs – and all lists that they compile – iSeeCars analyzed data from more than 12 million vehicles. It used information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as well as from its own team of data scientists. It also uses the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick awards to determine safety ratings. iSeeCars has conducted Longest-Lasting Cars and 5-Year Depreciation Studies which have helped inform these rankings. The lists are ranked based on overall score but incorporate those three major categories: reliability, value retention, and safety.
Some SUVs have a perfect safety score
While some of the midsize SUVs on iSeeCars’ list have varying safety scores, there are a good number with perfect scores. These include the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe XL, 2022 Hyundai Palisade, 2022 Ford Explorer, 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, 2022 Mazda CX-9, 2022 Volkswagen Atlas, 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, 2022 Subaru Ascent, 2022 Honda Passport, 2022 Chevy Blazer, 2022 Toyota Highlander, and 2022 Honda Pilot.
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner doesn’t have a perfect safety rating
Most of the Best Midsize SUVs for 2022 have perfect safety ratings, but that doesn’t mean they all do. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a perfect example of this. iSeeCars gives it a safety rating of 8.0. The NHTSA gives it an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. This includes a 4 star rating for the overall front crash as well as front driver side crash test. The passenger side has a rating of just three stars.
Likewise, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner doesn’t have a perfect rating from the IIHS either. It isn’t a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ winner. The Toyota 4Runner has a marginal small overlap front: driver side rating. This includes a poor rating for the structure and safety cage.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a less-than-perfect safety rating
The other SUV on iSeeCars’ list of the Best Midsize SUVs for 2022 is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. With an overall score of 8.3, the Jeep Grand Cherokee ranks number eight on the list. This includes a reliability rating of 8.4 and a value retention score of 7.7. Yet the Grand Cherokee’s safety score is just 8.8. While some versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee haven’t yet been tested by the NHTSA, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK gets just four stars. This includes four stars for the overall front and front driver side ratings. The front passenger side rating is five stars.
In addition, the IIHS gives the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee a marginal rating for its small overlap front: driver side and a poor rating for the small overlap front: passenger side. The headlights are rated just acceptable and poor. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK has those same ratings.
Overall, the Best Midsize SUVs for 2022 are pretty safe, but that doesn’t mean that they’re perfect. If you’re in the market for a new midsize SUV, you might want to consider one of the thirteen safest SUVs instead of the two with less-than-perfect ratings.
