Few sports cars are as iconic as the Porsche 911, or as desirable, especially in air-cooled form. It influences not only the company’s other cars but its design work outside the automotive segment. Porsche hasn’t just collaborated with other automakers and bike companies, but it’s also designed a Star Wars starship. And now, it’s helped bring a piece of a video game to life. It’s created an IRL version of the Porsche 930 911 Turbo driven by Keanu Reeves’ Cyberpunk 2077 character.

The Porsche 930 911 Turbo: the original ‘widow maker’

The Porsche 911 has evolved quite a bit over the years. One of the biggest changes came in 1974 when Porsche introduced its first production turbocharged car, Hagerty reports. That car was the first Porsche 911 Turbo, aka the 930.

When the Porsche 930 911 Turbo arrived in the US as a 1976 model, sports cars were being strangled by emissions regulations, Car and Driver reports. The Mustang II King Cobra’s 5.0-liter V8 made just 139 hp. In contrast, the 930’s 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six makes 234 hp in US-spec, and 260 hp in Euro trim, Autoweek reports.

And in 1978, the engine grew to 3.3 liters and gained an intercooler, bumping the output to 261 hp and 291 lb-ft. The later Carrera bumped that up to 296 hp and 304 lb-ft, Roadshow reports. With a 4-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, and 2844-lb curb weight, the Porsche 930 911 Turbo goes 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, Car and Driver reports.

The Porsche 930 911 Turbo has a few upgrades over the standard car beside the engine, Road & Track reports. It has upgraded suspension, brakes, tires, and wheels, along with flared fenders and an iconic ‘whale-tail’ rear spoiler. However, thanks to the rear-engine design and copious turbo lag, it earned a reputation as a ‘widow maker,’ R&T reports. And it has no driver aids, not even ABS, Car reports.

When it’s driven with care, though, it’s a fun classic sports car, Petrolicious reports. The chassis and steering communicate well with the driver, though the steering ratio is a bit slow, Car and Driver reports. And at low speeds, it’s fairly comfortable. As long as you pay attention, it won’t bite you. Maybe.

That sounds like a perfect combination for a cyberpunk outlaw.

Making Keanu Reeves’ Cyberpunk 2077 character’s Porsche 911 Turbo a reality

In CD Projekt Red’s upcoming video game Cyberpunk 2077, Keanu Reeves is the voice and face of Johnny Silverhand. He’s an ex-military vet and former head of the in-universe band “Samurai,” and is currently an anti-mega-corporation revolutionary. And he drives a heavily modified 1977 Porsche 930 911 Turbo, Motor Trend reports.

In the Cyberpunk 2077 game, Silverhand’s 911 Turbo runs on biofuel, and features a custom exhaust and automatic transmission, Roadshow reports. It also has video cameras instead of mirrors, as well as lidar and extra sensors and screens. As a result, it can operate autonomously. Plus, it has a custom paint job and external graphics, including a “Samurai”-emblazoned spoiler.

But Silverhand’s Porsche 930 911 Turbo isn’t just an in-game item. Porsche made a real-life version of it. It doesn’t have the autonomous features and screens that the in-game car has, Jalopnik reports. However, it runs and drives. And it’ll be on display in the Porsche Museum from October 15-22, 2020.

Can you do the same IRL?

Luckily, you can recreate the visual parts of the Cyberpunk 2077 Porsche 930 911 Turbo with yellow headlights and a custom wrap. However, it won’t be cheap.

Like other air-cooled 911s, 930 911 Turbo prices have risen over the years, bolstered by its poster-car status. Also, the US-spec supply is limited compared to Europe. Porsche briefly stopped selling it here due to emissions regulations. It went away in 1980 and came back in 1986.

Today, the average price of a Porsche 930 911 Turbo hovers around $100,000 on Bring a Trailer. And even the cheapest models rarely go for under $70,000.
