On August 10, a man entered the sales floor of a car dealership in Memphis, Tennessee. After starting the purchase process for two high-dollar Kia Telluride models, though, the staff realized the man was not who he claimed to be.

The 2024 Kia Telluride mid-size SUV seats up to eight passengers, comes with a 3.8L V6, 291 hp, a 5,000-5,500 lb towing capacity, and starts at $35,990 for the LX. Work your way up to the SX Prestige X-Pro trim, though, and you’re looking at $53,185 or more.

Since the shopper in question picked out two Tellurides for a grand total of $158,885, we’re assuming he selected fully loaded models with all the bells and whistles. Even then, something must have been added to the vehicles at the dealer since the SX Prestige X-Pro trim maxes out on build options at $55,570, including a $1,395 destination fee.

While we’re not quite sure how these Tellurides ended up averaging $79K apiece, the Memphis Police Department reported that the man used a fake Tennesee driver’s license to fill out purchase paperwork. What’s more, the name on the ID matched a deceased person.

Once the staff alerted the police to the fraudulent behavior, they decided to let the “purchase” play out while they waited for authorities to arrive.

The whole process included a “congratulatory” video that ended up on TikTok.

The Memphis Police Department said the 63-year-old had the keys to both Kia Telluride models at the time of his arrest. Police charged the man with Forgery and Attempted Theft of Property. The court set his bond at $50,000.
