As of December 1, Lamborghini will have a new CEO. Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann will take on the role of CEO and President while still holding down the fort at Bugatti. However, a shakeup in its executive team isn’t the only exciting news coming out of Lamborghini this week.

Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann is heading back to Lamborghini

Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann is taking the helm at Lamborghini come December 1. This won’t be Winkelmann’s first foray into CEO territory at the company either. Winkelmann previously served as the CEO of Lamborghini from 2005 to 2016. 

During his original tenure, Winkelmann transformed the supercar brand into a global leader among super sports car manufacturers. Several iconic and cutting-edge models were introduced to Lamborghini’s lineup. Winkelmann saw the automaker set numerous sales records during his time as CEO too.

“It is a great honor and pleasure for me to lead these two unique companies with their extraordinary automobiles. I am looking forward to the new challenge. Bugatti stands for the best, most powerful, elegant and luxurious hyper sports cars in the world. Lamborghini is the iconic expression of the most exclusive super sports cars demonstrating outstanding design and innovation. Our creativity in both companies is by no means finished and the world is assured some surprises,” Winkelmann said of his return.

This is where Lamborghini’s current CEO is heading

But where is current Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali off to? Come January, Domenicali is taking the reigns as President and CEO of Formula 1. Domenicali has worked at Formula 1 before too. In his previous positions, Domenicali served as a Team Manager. He then became Sporting Director in 2002 and then served as Team Principal in 2008.

“I am thrilled to join the Formula 1 organization, a sport that has always been part of my life. I was born in Imola and live in Monza. I’ve remained connected to the sport through my work with the Single Seater Commission at the FIA and I look forward to connecting with the teams, promoters, sponsors and many partners in Formula 1 as we continue to drive the business ahead,” Domenicali said when commenting on his new position.

Domenicali added that leading Lamborghini gave him a broader perspective. It also gave him a wealth of experience that he plans to bring to Formula 1. He wished Winkelmann great success in his new position too.

A new CEO isn’t the only big news this week

The return of Winkelmann as Lamborghini’s CEO isn’t the only big news we’ve seen come out of the supercar maker this week. This week also saw the unveiling of the automaker’s brand new Huracán STO. 

Dubbed by Lamborghini as “a road-legal super sports car with a racing heart,” the Huracán STO is inspired by the heritage of Lamborghini Squadra Corse. Lamborghini says that it improves on the superior aerodynamics and engineering of the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO and the Huracán GT3 EVO too. All in all, the supercar maker says, “the new Huracán EVO STO, a rear-wheel drive super sports car with naturally aspirated V10 engine, is based on a true story: born on the track but destined for road use.”
