When you think Lamborghini, you likely picture angular supercars carving canyons or living it up in the city. Crucially, neither activity involves sliding through mud or any kind of off-roading. However, even before the Urus came around, Lamborghini dabbled in off-pavement exploration. And now, it’s getting ready to play in the dirt again. Only this time, it’s not doing it in an SUV. Instead, it’s bringing a supercar concept to life: the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato.

In 2019, Lamborghini dreamed of a Huracan that could go off-road

Over the past few years, Lamborghini has introduced a variety of new Huracans. There’s the track-sharp Huracan STO, the gentler but still insane Huracan Tecnica, and…you get the point. But in 2019, it presented a special one-off concept called the Huracan Sterrato.

In Italian, ‘sterrato’ roughly translates to ‘dirt road,’ which is what the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato was designed to conquer. Based on the 631-hp Huracan Evo, the Sterrato features a modified version of its AWD, rear-wheel steering, and torque-vectoring differential. In addition, Lamborghini gave it wider front and rear tracks, an extra 1.9” of ground clearance, and better approach and departure angles. It modified the stability control and traction control, too.

Furthermore, the Sterrato concept features aluminum skid plates and side skirts as well as carbon-fiber-composite protective panels for its engine and air intakes. Also, to accommodate the wider tracks and new 20” wheels with off-road-rated tires, Lamborghini gave it some sweet bolt-on fender flares. Plus, the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato’s interior has aluminum floors, carbon-fiber seats with four-point harnesses, and a titanium roll cage. And what kind of rally car would it be without some sweet LED lights?

Although it was a concept, the 2019 Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato was functional. MotorTrend even took it for a spin on both a track and dirt road and had a blast. But at the time, it was just that: a concept, a ‘what if?’ notion inspired by developing the Urus.

However, things have changed since 2019.

A new teaser shows the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato is really happening

For one, not only have Safari 911 builds exploded in popularity, but Porsche is seemingly making a factory version. And then you have the likes of Morgan making a limited-edition sports car with an actual Dakar Rally team. In other words, off-roading a sports car or supercar isn’t just a ‘what if,’ it’s reality. And now, so is the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato.

Earlier this year, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann declared that the brand was bringing two new Huracan models to market in 2022. The first was the previously-mentioned Tecnica. And in a recent teaser, shown above, Lamborghini dropped hints about the second.

Interspersed between shots of people mountain biking, the ‘Beyond the Concrete’ video shows a Lamborghini Huracan with some familiar lights. It has a new orange-black-and-white camouflage look, an extra air intake, and no light bar, but that is the Huracan Sterrato in its element. Namely, sliding around dirt roads accompanied by a V10 symphony. And no, this isn’t just a reminder of a past concept car, Lamborghini is genuinely building this thing.

Yup, watch out, Safari 911s, Morgan Plus Four C-XTs, and that Ferrari SUV, there’s a Raging Bull coming.

When will this dirt-prepped Lambo debut and how much will it cost?

As of this writing, Lamborghini has only said “stay tuned” regarding the Huracan Sterrato’s availability. It also hasn’t confirmed if the production off-road supercar will still be based on the Huracan Evo, or if another model’s mechanicals underpins it. And it hasn’t released pricing details, either. But keep in mind that a ‘base’ Huracan, the Evo, starts at over $210,000.

However, given Winkelmann’s previous remarks, the production-spec Sterrato will likely officially debut before 2022’s end. So, sometime in the next few months, Lamborghini will take the wraps off its off-roader and let it get dirty.
