Which Large Sedan Gets the Best Gas Mileage?
Gas prices are still sky-high throughout the nation, causing many Americans to look for fuel-efficient cars. However, cars like the Toyota Prius and Hyundai Ioniq may not suit everyone’s needs, especially if more room is needed. But for families needing a large sedan, which one is the most fuel-efficient?
The large sedan that gets the best gas mileage is also one of the most reliable
The most fuel-efficient large sedan in the market is the 2022 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. That should be no surprise considering Toyota is known for making hybrid models out of everything. There’s a Corolla Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, and a Prius, so why not an Avalon?
The Toyota Avalon is powered by a 2.5-liter engine that’s paired with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery. Together, the system makes 215 hp, which is plenty of power to get on the freeway and pass cars easily. Every Avalon model features a CVT that routes the power solely to the front wheels.
As you can imagine, the Avalon Hybrid returns stellar fuel economy numbers. According to the EPA, the Avalon Hybrid can achieve up to 43 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. The editors at MotorTrend noted that “no other full-size sedan on the market comes close on fuel economy, but the midsize Honda Accord Hybrid is fairly spacious.”
Taking a step down in size and going with an Accord Hybrid will give buyers a fuel economy return of 48 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway. However, there are a few alternatives to the Toyota Avalon Hybrid for those that want to remain in the full-size category.
The 2023 Nissan Maxima is fuel-efficient, but it doesn’t come close to the Avalon
Buyers looking for another viable option to the 2022 Toyota Avalon Hybrid can check out the 2023 Nissan Maxima. The Maxima is available with one engine choice – a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 300 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. As you can guess, that engine is great for performance but suffers when it comes to fuel efficiency.
When it comes to gas mileage, the EPA estimates that the Nissan Maxima should get up to 20 mpg in the city and up to 30 mpg on the highway. That’s not bad, but it’s nowhere near the fuel efficiency you’ll find in the Avalon Hybrid.
For more power and class, there’s the 2022 Chrysler 300
If neither the Toyota Avalon nor the Nissan Maxima fit the bill, maybe the Chrysler 300 will. This large sedan provides a comfortable and spacious interior that’s handsome and well-sorted. It’s also powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that puts out 292 hp, which is more than enough for the daily drive.
However, with great power comes less fuel efficiency. As such, the Chrysler 300 can get up to an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Again, it’s not a bad rating for a large near-luxury sedan, but it can’t beat the Avalon.
Case in point, if you’re searching for a full-size sedan that can tote around your family in comfort and style but don’t want to worry about running out of gas – the 2022 Toyota Avalon Hybrid is your best choice.
