Oh no, the Ford Mustang Mach-E could be facing another problem. It has racked up about eight recalls since its debut in 2021, but drivers are upset over a separate issue that hasn’t been corrected. Reportedly, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E has a defective battery connector. 

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E batteries might be overheating

According to Car Scoops, owners of the 2021 and 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E have had enough. Reportedly, multiple drivers are suing Ford over an unresolved safety issue that causes the Mustang Mach-E to die. 

A battery connector that’s prone to overheating could be to blame. Allegedly, the connector can overheat, causing the Mustang Mach-E to become immobilized, creating dangerous situations on the road. 

The federal lawsuit reports that Ford has a uniformly defective high voltage battery main contactor that may overheat, thereby immobilizing the vehicle or causing it to lose power during operation. The contactors on this vehicle are prone to fail during ordinary and foreseeable vehicle operations. 

Is there a solution for this Mustang Mach-E problem? 

Well, sort of. There was a recall for the 2021 – 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E in June that addressed this issue. Owners of affected vehicles were notified about an over-the-air update to address the issue. 

But owners suggest this isn’t a good enough solution. If the over the air update reduces the amount of power cycling through the components, then recharging and acceleration times could be slower. 

Also, when the battery connector overheated, it could be left open or weld itself shut. Both situations leave the Mach-E without power. 

Ford took a moment to clarify things. It’s currently unaware of any injuries or accidents related to this potential problem. Plus, the recall is meant to protect the contactor, and the hardware will be replaced if necessary. It hasn’t been served with the suit yet, either. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) only had one complaint about this issue before the recall went out. Owners can take their vehicles in for service for the update, and vehicle deliveries were stopped until the issue could be corrected. 

How reliable is the Ford Mustang Mach-E?

Despite having eight recalls, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E has an above-average predicted reliability ranking. The score is based on how the 2021 model performed and how similar Ford vehicles have been holding up. 

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is expected to last between 300,000 to 500,000 miles before the lithium-ion battery cells need replacements. That’s a shockingly long time for a vehicle to last. It’s on Toyota’s level. 

But when it’s time to replace the battery, it might not come cheap. Currently, the standard-range battery costs about $18,514, and the extended-range battery is about $23,648. The Mustang Mach-E comes with an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty, though. 

The recall for the battery contactor includes about 40,000 models, and we plan to keep an eye on this story. Perhaps Ford will release more information about inspecting and replacing the battery hardware soon. 

It’s possible that Ford will follow through with excellent customer service, but it might have to go to court. Until then, the Mustang Mach-E is still one of the most popular selling vehicles.
