Lawsuit Alert: Nissan Might Have Sold Defective Trucks
It seems like every other week, an automaker faces a lawsuit, and now Nissan is in the spotlight. A new class-action lawsuit has been filed against Nissan and Cummins Inc. for knowingly selling trucks with a defective fuel pump. Some have referred to the situation as a “ticking time bomb” because the Nissan Titan XD diesel can fail at any moment.
Is there a class action lawsuit against Nissan?
On March 23, 2023, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Nissan for one of the trucks that it produces. Now, Nissan no longer offers a diesel truck in the States, but apparently, when it did, it was problematic. The lawsuit is over defective fuel pumps that can cause engine failure. To make matters worse, it doesn’t look like mileage is a factor. Failure can happen at any time.
You have likely heard of the engine manufacturer Cummins. The brand’s engines are typically found in Ram vehicles and other trucks. But for a time, the company also did work for Nissan. Supplying the Nissan Titan XD with a diesel engine.
Total engine failure is not a cheap or easy thing to fix. And Nissan is refusing to correct the issue under warranty. It makes sense that a group of Titan owners would want to try their luck in court.
The Nissan Titan XD is a “ticking time bomb”
According to Business Wire, some have referred to the Nissan Titan XD diesel as a “ticking time bomb.” That is because the Bosch CP4 fuel pump can fail at any time. The CP4 fuel pump is not necessarily faulty by design. It’s just that it is built to the specifications of European diesel.
Now, I know what you might be thinking: European diesel differs from U.S. diesel? The answer is yes. Diesel sold here in the States is less lubricous than that used in Europe. Because of that, the fuel pump in the Nissan Titan XD diesel can generate metal shavings that get into the fuel system.
When that happens, the fuel injectors can become blocked. And that spells disaster for your truck’s engine. To make matters worse, because of the nature of the problem, there’s not really a permanent fix. Unless you move yourself and your diesel truck to a country that utilizes the correct fuel.
Is the diesel Nissan Titan reliable?
In terms of reliability, if what is laid out in the class-action lawsuit is true, the Nissan Titan XD with the Cummins diesel might not be the best. The suit covers violations of warranty laws and state consumer rights laws. It is filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.
A lot of times, when folks get a diesel truck, longevity is one of the factors. A well-made diesel engine can last hundreds of thousands of miles. But with a faulty fuel pump not designed for U.S. diesel, the Cummins engine found in the Nissan Titan XD might be an exception.
