Things are escalating pretty quickly for the incredibly popular Ford Maverick. Every time we turn around, there’s a fresh update. It’s getting difficult to keep up with this little truck. After learning about the hybrid model gaining AWD, we’ve spotted a new Ford Maverick PHEV model. 

Is the Ford Maverick PHEV coming out? 

Maybe. New spy photos captured what seems to be a new Ford Maverick PHEV model being tested in the streets. This means that a plug-in hybrid variant could be in the works. Also, the PHEV could have more power and range than the hybrid model. 

According to Motor1, the Maverick has a junction box on the rear end that says “PHE-V” and “2.1-L”. This may indicate that the plug-in model is paired with a 2.1-liter engine. Reportedly, the base weight increased to 3,946 lbs. 

The extra weight can be attributed to adding an all-wheel drive system or heavier batteries. Either way, this little truck gets extra power or will have a hybrid variant that can be paired with AWD. Both possibilities are exciting. 

Also, the spy photos may have revealed that the Maverick has an independent rear suspension, meaning power can be sent to each wheel. 

The truck is covered in camouflage, so we don’t have many clues to go on. Plus, the truck bed is covered, so we aren’t sure what type of equipment is being hidden. 

How much power does the Maverick PHEV have? 

The Ford Maverick PHEV could borrow the same setup from the Ford Escape PHEV. The Escape PHEV pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 14.4-kWh battery pack. It cranks out 221 hp and has an all-electric driving range of about 37 miles. 

Currently, the Maverick uses a 1.1-kWh battery, but Ford designed the truck with enough room to accommodate a second battery pack. This means that it already has the space for a larger unit and more power. 

The Ford Maverick Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and its battery to crank out 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. Bumping its power up by 30 horses is a significant increase. The hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. 

The 2.0-liter turbo-four engine provides 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The gas-powered MAverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs, while the hybrid can only tow up to 2,000 lbs.

The 2023 Ford Maverick PHEV would certainly increase prices a bit. Currently, the 2023 Maverick is expected to start at about $21,000. The price could increase due to high demand and cover the cost of inflation. 

We know it’s been a struggle to get behind the wheel of a Maverick since the 2022 models sold out in the blink of an eye, but it’s almost time to get on the waiting list. The ordering book for the 2023 Maverick opens in August. 

A lot of stuff could be in the pipeline, including a possible Ford Maverick ST model for racing. Even if the hybrid model can be paired with AWD, it might not be the only exciting upgrade.
