Leaked! Future Toyota EV SUVs Are Strikingly Bold
Back in January, when you could do these types of things, Subaru held a technical meeting in Japan. There, it announced details of a joint venture with Toyota for a shared all-electric platform. It also showed off an EV crossover concept more than hinting at what the platform might wreak. Few details were given for the concept other than what it was; a boldly-styled EV crossover. Today leaked images showed up taken from filings with China’s National Patent Office. The two models shared are future Toyota EV SUVs and are strikingly bold.
You can see the future for both Toyota and Subaru EV crossovers
We don’t have a lot of technical info on them because they’re leaked images. However, you can see what the future holds for both Toyota and Subaru EV crossovers. One of the models is a midsize crossover with three rows of seats. The other reveals a compact EV SUV. Both are based on variations of the e-TNGA EV platform.
The compact EV is especially daring with heavy sculpturing and black-clad wheel arches. The arches also become a vivid design element for the front fenders. Because of the third-row seating, the larger SUV retains a more conventional profile. In some ways, it looks like a toned-down version of the concept shown in January.
Both models reveal a lot of body sculpting that emphasizes the wheel openings
The three-row SUV still displays a lot of body sculpting that emphasizes the wheel openings. As a hint at what China approves technology-wise check out the side-view cameras. And in the case of the larger SUV notice that they are placed higher on the A-pillars than is the convention. Flush door handles and the wheels pushed out with less overhang are more features.
On the small crossover, the rear cants forward much like a Lexus UX. For the three-row, the back takes on a much more dramatic look. The blacked-out top and C-pillar extend graphically down the back to the bumper. It helps in breaking up the mass of the back due to the third row, and visually shorten what seems like a long wheelbase.
Toyota intends to launch 10 new EVs in the next couple of years
Toyota has already said it intends to launch 10 new EVs in the next couple of years. It is a break from leading the field in hybrid technology for the last 15 years. Subaru has said it will generate at least 40% of global sales through EV or hybrid vehicles by 2030. So, both Japanese companies are going all-in on EV production.
With Toyota hitting almost 450,000 RAV4’s sold last year in the US alone we could see the smaller crossover shown as a RAV4 EV. It could build off of the popularity of the RAV4. Or maybe it is an electric version of the next RAV4? More than likely we would expect the three-row shown to be headed to the US at some point. As you already know three-row SUVs are hot here right now.
More Toyota models are featuring expressive styling
Much of this is speculation because details are few. But, it does preview where Toyota is going in terms of styling across the board. In the past, Toyota has gotten a bad rap for its rather bland designs. But in recent years it has kicked design in gear. What was once bland sedans like the Camry and Avalon have received some expressive styling.
Now we are seeing that same bold flair featured on these leaked images. Hey Toyota, show us some more.
