The Land Rover Defender was an iconic vehicle that hasn’t rolled off the production line since it was retired in 2016. But all that is about to change. Fans of the SUV were delighted when Land Rover announced that it was releasing a brand-new version of the Defender.

With the discovery that many retired SUVs are going to be made available again in 2020, we’ve been eagerly combing the web for any and all leaks of these iconic vehicles, no matter how minor.

Recently, a possible 2020 Land Rover Defender design report was potentially revealed by Motor1. This is exactly the kind of news that completely makes our day!

The latest Land Rover Defender design scoop

Our super sneaky sources, Motor1, directed us to an Instagram photo. Based on what we saw, it appears that the Defender is holding to its guns and not following the curvy lines other SUVs have been incorporating into their design over the past few years.

The 2020 Defender looks like it’s going to be just as boxy and proud as previous versions. This is good news for consumers who like their SUVs to look like SUVs and not fancy station wagons.

The post only reveals one side of the Defender, but that’s enough to provide quite a bit of intel on the vehicle. Based on the image we can surmise the following about the newest Defenders:

• It has a boxy design that strongly resembles the Mercedes G-Wagon
• There is a vertical vent in the front bumper
• It has four doors, which is great for transporting people, groceries, and all sorts of camping equipment
• There is a slight curve in the hood, which is odd on a vehicle that’s designed mainly out of straight lines
• It features the classic Land Rover single alloy wheels

While this is clearly a four-door model, rumor has it that there is also a two-door model in the works. Another rumor is that the company plans to release a pick-up version with a single cab.

Have there been any other leaks?

One of the interesting things about the photo is the glimpse of the odometer. It reads 15,409 kilometers (9,575 miles.) That seems like an awful lot of miles for a prototype.

On the other hand, it’s encouraging to know that Land Rover already invested so many hours behind the wheel of this design. It’s lots of fun to imagine all the different types of terrains and driving situations the vehicle may already have been tested on.

Hopefully, some video footage of the early drives will eventually make its way to social media platforms. This will give us an awesome opportunity to figure out how the vehicle handles.

It also looks like the Land Rover Defender is capable of reaching 220 kph (137 mph). Though it’s doubtful there will be many Land Rover drivers who are truly interested in testing out the vehicle’s top speed. 

Once the Defender is released, it’s expected to provide stiff competition for the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. It’s also possible that SUV fans who prefer the boxier look will opt to purchase the Defender instead of the Mercedes G-Wagon.

When you can see the 2020 Land Rover Defender

Land Rover hasn’t released any official work on when the public will get its first real look at the Land Rover Defender. Speculations are it will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. 

Car experts fully expect that you’ll be able to purchase the 2020 Land Rover Defender at either the tail end of 2019 or early in 2020.
