Lego Puts a McLaren Senna GTR on Your Desk for 3% of the Real Thing’s Price
Whether you’re into hypercars or classic cars, Lego offers an affordable alternative to owning the real thing. And it’s one you can build yourself to store practically wherever. The company’s already produced models of several high-end vehicles, including the Ducati Panigale V4 R and the Charger from Fast and Furious. And now it’s bringing out another: a McLaren Senna GTR.
The name ‘Senna’ holds a special place in McLaren’s history. That’s because famed Brazilian F1 driver Ayrton Senna won all three of his championships behind the wheel of a McLaren. So, to honor his memory, the automaker created a supercar with his name. One that could be driven on the road but was really meant for the racetrack. And then, it created an even more extreme version.
The McLaren Senna GTR is an even more hard-core version of an already track-focused supercar
The ‘standard’ McLaren Senna is already an impressive machine, Car and Driver reports. It has a carbon-fiber chassis with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 mounted in the middle. In the Senna, it makes 789 hp and 590 lb-ft, sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. And thanks to a 2640-lb dry weight—the lightest McLaren since the F1—it goes 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, Motor Trend reports.
That’s actually slower than the 720S, but there’s a reason for that. The McLaren Senna makes almost literally (88% of) a ton of downforce, Road & Track reports. That’s thanks to wings hidden within the fenders, a double diffuser, that large rear wing, and plenty of active aero elements. It’s slightly inaccurate to call it a race car because GTE/GTLM cars weigh more, are less powerful, and lack both the active aero and active hydraulic suspension.
The track-only McLaren Senna GTR, though, is even closer to a genuine race car. It still doesn’t conform to FIA regulations, Automobile reports. But it’s definitely a “lightweight track monster,” MT reports.
Like the ‘base’ car, the McLaren Senna GTR has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Only the GTR’s engine makes 814 hp, and the whole car weighs 22 pounds less than the ‘road’ car. That’s despite having a wider track, a built-in roll cage and fire extinguishing system, and pneumatic jacks, Car and Driver reports. The McLaren Senna GTR also has a different rear wing, front splitter, and rear diffuser, along with even more aero elements, Roadshow reports.
Naturally, none of these changes come cheap. The standard Senna costs just under $965k, Car and Driver reports. The McLaren Senna GTR starts at roughly $1.47 million, Roadshow reports. Luckily, the Lego version is a bit more attainable.
The Lego Technic McLaren Senna GTR has working parts
Naturally, Lego’s McLaren Senna GTR kit isn’t made out of carbon fiber. But at 12” long, it’s easier to store, Autoblog reports. Plus, it’s part of Lego’s Technic series, which means it has some functional elements.
The Lego Senna GTR kit contains 830 pieces and has the same livery as the real car, R&T reports. It also has dihedral doors like the genuine Senna GTR, meaning they open upwards and forwards, Car and Driver explains. Plus, the Lego McLaren Senna GTR’s mid-mounted V8 has movable pistons. The steering and suspension are functional, too.
Although this is the first Lego Technic McLaren, it’s not the first time the Senna has been immortalized in brick form. In 2019 the automaker commissioned a 1:1 scale model of the Senna made out of Legos, R&T reports. It took 42 people almost 5000 hours to design and build the model, which had working lights, doors, and real Senna wheels.
Presumably, building the new Lego Senna GTR will take significantly less time.
Pricing and availability
Lego’s McLaren Senna GTR kit is scheduled to release January 1st, 2021. The kit retails for $49.99.
And not only is it cheaper than the real Senna GTR, but it will also be easier to find. McLaren built just 75 Senna GTRs, and they’ve all been sold.
