Let’s Configure an Affordable 2022 Toyota Tundra To Be Capable Off-Road
Toyota is known for its legendary off-road capability and the all-new 2022 Tundra is no exception. But not everyone has $66,805 to drop on the top-trim 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. So let’s configure a more affordable, but nearly as capable Tundra.
Start with the Toyota Tundra SR5
The first important thing is that we avoid starting with the entry-level Tundra SR. Though Toyota offers this base trim Tundra at an appealing $35,950, the automaker does not offer this truck with the TRD Off-Road package which will be important for our capable 4×4 build.
The most affordable 2022 Tundra that you can option with Toyota’s off-road package is the SR5. The Tundra SR5 starts at $40,755 for a four-door double cab with a 6.5-foot bed. (If you want more space in the rear seat, you can get a Crew Max cab with a 5.5-foot bed (the same configuration as the TRD Pro) for $42,805.
Next, we’re going to option our Tundra SR5 with 4WD. This will add an even $3,000 to the truck’s price. Every Tundra comes with some version of the 3.44-liter, twin-turbocharged V6, and a ten-speed transmission. The Tundra SR5 makes 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
Add the TRD Off-Road package
Toyota has long offered Toyota Racing Development (TRD) packages to upgrade the capabilities of its trucks and SUVs. For years, TRD Off-Road was even a trim level of the Tundra. But in 2022, TRD Off-Road became a trim package for either the Tundra SR5 or the Tundra Limited.
Ordering the TRD Off-Road package is one of the best hacks for configuring a capable and affordable Tundra. With the TRD Off-Road package, you can get many of the same goodies available on the 2022 Tundra TRD Pro, but for a fraction of the price. See how the TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road stack up in the table below:
4WD Tundra SR5 (TRD Off-Road) | Tundra TRD Pro | |
Price | $46,165 | $66,805 |
Output | 389 horsepower, 479 lb-ft of torque | 437 horsepower, 583 lb-ft of torque |
Suspension | Tuned Bilstein shock absorbers | 2.5-inch FOX Racing |
Rims | 18-inch TRD Racing | 18-inch BBS Forged TRD Racing |
Tires | Falken Wildpeak A/T (265) | Falken Wildpeak A/T (285) |
The Tundra TRD Pro features the new hybrid i-FORCE MAX drivetrain. This setup bumps the stock twin-turbocharged V6’s output to Ford F-150 Raptor levels by sandwiching an electric motor between the Tundra’s gasoline engine and automatic transmission.
In addition, the Tundra TRD Pro features rims and tires so wide, it needs fender flares and oversized vehicle marker lights. But in many other ways, the Tundra SR5 with the TRD Off-Road package is very similar to the TRD Pro. They share Falken Wildpeak A/T tires, TRD Racing rims, and off-road-tuned shock absorbers.
What’s more, the difference between the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro and SR5 with the TRD Off-Road package is equivalent to a 2022 Toyota Corolla or a 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup truck.
The 2022 Tundra SR5 with TRD Off-Road package costs $46,165
The 4WD Tundra SR5 outfitted with Toyota’s TRD Off-Road package comes in under $47k. But the customization does not end there. For that price, you can get your Tundra with either a Boulder (gray) fabric or a black fabric interior. You can also order your truck in white, gray, silver, black, army green, navy blue, or lunar rock (gunmetal) gray. Only Supersonic Red costs extra ($425).
If you want to upgrade your SR5 to larger rims, like on the Tundra Limited, you can also order the “Adventure Tire/Wheel Combo” for $1,495. This combo includes 20-inch rims and A/T tires.
Now you know how to configure your own off-road-ready 2022 Toyota Tundra with a price tag below $47k. Read more about the TRD Off-Road package or see a full Toyota Tundra buying guide in the video below:
