Lexus Announces Plans to Expand Electric Lineup
With rising gasoline prices, even the rich feel the pains of high fuel costs. These days, people are considering purchasing an electric car. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that Lexus will offer more electric models soon. The Japanese automaker made the announcement at its Lexus Milestones event held in honor of 30 years in business.
Lexus played a big role in the hybrid craze when it introduced the RX 400h, the first luxury vehicle to go hybrid. Other automakers quickly followed suit. Never one to let others set the standards, Lexus will make it an option to purchase an electric car for all of its models. Toyota, Lexus’s parent company, plans to offer an electric option on all of its models as well.
Is Lexus going strictly electric?
While some eco-warriors would love for this to happen, Lexus won’t go totally green. What we know for certain is that each model will have an electric option that consumers can choose. Perhaps someday Lexus will go fully electric, but it’s not in the cards so far.
What electric options will Lexus offer?
Technology is rapidly advancing, so when we say “electric vehicle,” there are more options than just a car that plugs in. Lexus Vice President Koji Sato reports that the brand will offer four different types: electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell.
Which model will get which type will depend on packing restraints and market demand. As for the U.S. market, Koji Sato says, “in the US at least, that landscape will likely be populated by more hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles.”
When will this come into effect?
It’s going to take a while for Lexus to get the ball rolling. The projected year is 2025, but time will tell if Lexus can deliver sooner than expected or if it will take longer. With changes in technology, it may open up more doors for Lexus that will greatly affect the time frame.
Which Lexus models already have electric options?
Lexus already has quite the collection of electric cars. The UXh, NXh, RXh, ESh, LCh, and LSh are part of the electric lineup. If you aren’t interested in waiting until 2025, you can take advantage of these models now.
Which models will be added?
Only five vehicles need to be modified by 2025. Three of them should be fairly easy to adjust: the RC, GS, and IS. Two Lexus SUVs, the GX and LX are also waiting for updates. Now, we’ll wait to see if any other automakers will offer a full lineup of electric options.
