Lifted Rally Fighter Coupe Looks Ready for Physics-Defying Fast and Furious Stunts
One of the most impressive aspects of the Fast and Furious franchise is how many different variations of a second-generation Dodge Charger Dominic Toretto’s built. There is of course the 1970 Charger R/T he and his father built for drag racing. But there is also a mid-engine Charger supercar and even an ice racing Charger. But one of my favorites is the lifted rally fighter Charger Dom uses to parachute out of an airplane for an off-road chase in Fast & Furious 6. A company called Local Motors briefly made the V8 rally fighter sports car a reality, and a beautiful example is currently for sale.
Local Motors tried a few different models before going out of business in 2022, in the midst of an electric project. But it was briefly an excellent bridge between kit cars and one-off customs. It had a series of “microfactories” around the U.S. where customers could help build and later customize their cars.
The Rally Fighter was a lifted sports car and Local Motors’ best-known product. While only a few were built, an especially nice 2011 Rally Fighter is currently up for auction on Cars and Bids (pictured).
Local Motors let customers pick from a range of V8 crate engines. This Rally Fighter ended up with a 6.2-liter LS3 “E-Rod” V8. It makes 430 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. It also has a 6-speed 6L90 automatic transmission driving the rear wheels and very cool “pistol grip” shifter.
This car was optioned with FOX shocks, Eibach springs, Sparco seats, 17-inch Method Racing Wheels. The interior is much like a race car with a roll cage and dash-mounted fire extinguisher. While it is a “kit” car with a fiberglass body, it also has comfort features such as air conditioning and cruise control.
Not only does this specific Rally Fighter have a unique “99” livery, but it also has only 900 miles on the odometer. These are rare enough that I hope the next owner takes good care of it, and never parachutes it out of a plane.
