The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a tech-heavy new electric vehicle for this year. Hyundai wanted the Ioniq 5 to be an easy switch for people who might be new to electric vehicles. In addition, the automaker wanted the charging process to be quick and easy. With that said, the Ioniq will support both 400-volt and 800-volt power sources.

Utilizing a 350-kWh charger, Inside EVs says the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range all-wheel drive will charge from 10% SoC (State of Charge) to 80% SoC in about 18 minutes. This added about 179 miles of range using the 800-volt DC charging. The Hyundai EV can get 68 miles of range in about five minutes for those utilizing a DC Fast Charger. On the standard range battery, going from 10% SoC to 80% SoC at 38.5 kWh, the Ioniq added 154 miles of range using the 400-volt DC charging.

The ranges of these versions depend on the battery life and drivetrain. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD Long Range has a 256-mile range, while the RWD version gets a 303-mile range. The standard range sits right around 220 miles of range.

How long does it take to fully charge the Ioniq 5 from a standard 240-volt outlet?

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the first electric vehicles able to support 800-volt ultra-fast charging. The automaker plans to use the Electric Global Modular Platform (e-GMP) on all electric vehicles in the future, too. A regular 240-volt outlet can fully charge the Ioniq 5 from 10% to 100% in six hours and 43 minutes. This uses the standard 10.9kW onboard Level 2 charger, so you can plug in at home or anywhere else.

The Ioniq EV also uses regenerative braking to help add some range. Hyundai says, “when you coast or brake, the regenerative brakes convert the wheels’ rotations into electricity, which is stored in the battery for future use.” Using regenerative braking, you can switch between high and low to capture a lot or a little extra energy. If that’s not your speed, the “smart” or auto system chooses for you.

Hyundai made some thoughtful additions to the Ioniq 5, including a vehicle-to-Load (V2L) 120V charging outlet. That means you can use the EV to power other equipment and appliances. Need coffee? Plug in a coffee maker! You can even keep your laptop charged for longer camping trips. In an emergency, you can even charge another electric vehicle.
