The Longest Lasting Full-Size Truck Isn’t a Ford
There’s no getting around how much new pickup trucks cost in 2023. These types of vehicles can easily surpass the $60,000 mark, and it makes sense that folks want a truck that will last a long time. Thanks to its popularity, you might think the Ford F-150 is the longest-lasting truck. But the award might go to the Toyota Tundra.
How long does the Ford F-150 last?
In terms of longevity, a Ford F-150 should be able to surpass 250,000 miles. Some models might be able to achieve even more than that. That longevity is probably why the F-150 is one of the best-selling vehicles in the country.
Now, some of that reliability depends on ownership and the kind of treatment this full-size truck receives. While there can always be an unpreventable problem, routine maintenance, and repair can help ensure that your truck runs properly. And most high-mileage F-Series trucks probably receive the proper care.
According to a study conducted by iSeeCars.com, 14.1% of Ford F-150 trucks are expected to hit 250,000 miles. But the number could always be higher or lower than that.
The Toyota Tundra might be the longest-lasting truck
In the same study, iSeeCars determined that 47.9% of Toyota Tundra models would surpass 250,000 miles. If you know Toyota, you know that the brand has a reputation for building reliable vehicles. How much of that is based on fact vs. perception might be up for debate. But I once owned a 2007 Toyota Corolla S 5MT that was able to get well over 300,000 miles on the clock with minimal problems.
Another thing worth noting is that this study was conducted on vehicles sold between 2012 and 2022. That was back when you could get a Tundra with a V8 engine still. In 2023, all Tundra trucks are limited to a version of the 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. That powertrain might be pretty enjoyable to drive, and Toyota has put it in a variety of products. But it’s hard not to think that a turbocharged engine could face problems in the long run.
Of course, the Ford EcoBoost engine is tried and tested. Even with those turbocharged engines, it seems like the F-150 can still pack on the miles. But the Blue Oval has been using EcoBoost technology in its full-size truck since 2011.
Who makes the best truck?
At the end of the day, the best truck is the one you can afford and fits your lifestyle. In 2023, there are a variety of pickups on the market. Ranging from the compact Hyundai Santa Cruz to full-size trucks like the Toyota Tundra.
Most truck manufacturers invest quite a bit into their pickups. Because of that, these vehicles are seen as being generally reliable. There are always exceptions to the rules, though, and it’s more than likely that there will be a Ford F-150 out there that lasts longer than a Tundra.
