We know that electric vehicles are all the rage these days, particularly of the sedan and crossover varieties. The future is electric for many of our favorite global carmakers and their next big charge is focused on electric pickup trucks. 

Electric pickups are an intriguing concept, but the real question is, how will they compare to the traditional trucks so many of us already drive?

Whether we like it or not, there are quite a few completely new and electrified pickup trucks set to hit the market pretty soon. On the plus side, the related automakers with an electric mission are still prioritizing traditional fundamental pickup truck elements like incredible power, big torque capabilities, and all-wheel drive. 

Tesla Cybertruck 

Even though this truck isn’t expected to hit the streets until late 2021 (at the absolute earliest), it might be the most highly anticipated electric truck on the list. From what we’ve seen so far the Cybertruck’s design is incredibly futuristic and bizarre-looking. Tesla CEO Elon Musk says this thing can even float like a boat “for a while.”

It will be available three modes: a single electric motor option, as well as a two or even three electric motor option. The three-motor option has the ability to haul 14,000 pounds. Tesla is still looking to secure a production location but it’s hard to avoid falling for the hype. The base price for the Tesla pickup is allegedly $39,000. 

Rivian R1T

Another all-electric truck option that’s a sure conversation starter is the R1T, made by Rivian Automotive, a relatively new startup company. The R1T’s starting price will be around $69,000 and will be available for sale toward the end of 2020. Its exterior is a bit more understated than the Cybetruck, however, the R1T still exudes innovation and luxury. Rivian was founded in 2009 by Robert “R.J.” Scaringe, who is basically the anti-Elon Musk.

GMC Hummer EV SUT

Ironically, we are just reintroduced to the Hummer as a fully electric pickup truck recently, the complete antithesis to the gas-guzzling menace that was discontinued back in 2010. No matter how you look at it, the Hummer is basically on a GMC redemption tour. We don’t have a whole lot of details yet, but the Hummer EV SUT  is expected to also be available with up to three electric motors, 1,000 horsepower, and an absurd amount of torque. This initial truck is said to be priced around $70,000. 

GMC’s parent company, General Motors, is also planning to introduce the electric Ford F-Series in 2021 in addition to the e-version of the Chevrolet Silverado. GM has been pretty vague on product specifics but a recent patent revealed that the truck batteries will be positioned as a body-on-frame design. 

Lordstown Endurance

Lordstown Motors is another EV startup with intentions to revolutionize the traditional pickup truck. The Lordstown Endurance pickup truck will be in production later in 2020. What’s especially unique about this electric pickup is its in-wheel motors. On the other hand, we are a tad disappointed with its 600-horsepower which so-so for hauling. The starting price for the Lordstown is supposed to be $52,500.
