We Lost Way More Cool Cars When the Felicity Ace Cargo Ship Sank Than You Think
A little over a month ago, The Felicity Ace cargo ship, while carrying a bunch of cars caught fire, forcing the crew to abandon the ship. After days adrift at sea, the cargo ship slunk into the briny deep, where now it lives forever in Davy Jones’ locker. The story was that many Porsches and other VW Group cars were lost on the ship, which is true, but we now have the entire manifest showing a loss of 3,828 new and classic vehicles.
How many Porsches were lost on the Felicity Ace cargo ship?
Porsche has been the poster child for this sunken cargo ship story, and for good reason. Porsche alone lost over 1,100 units in the conflagration. The Volkswagen Group had most of the ship’s manifest, meaning VW took quite the hit.
CarScoops tallied up the manifest and learned that Porsche had 1,117 cars, VW had 561, Audi had 1,944, Bentley had 189, and Lamborghini had 85 vehicles on the ship. These are truly devastating numbers. They are particularly tough to stomach in the midst of the ongoing chip shortage and other supply chain issues.
However, if losing all those new vehicles wasn’t bad enough, tons of cool, funky, and rare used and classic cars were transported by private individuals.
The Felicity Ace also had some cool classics
One of the first pointed out by CarScoops is an interesting 1996 Honda Prelude SiR. The car’s owner posted on Facebook about his Prelude. He was importing this particular car because it was the 65th unit made of the fifth generation of this model. Admittedly, this is so far in the deep grass of car nerddom that we can’t expect many nights of lost sleep. But it is a cool car that is a shame to lose.
The weirdos don’t stop there, though. The manifest also shows that a 1977 Land Rover Santana was also onboard amongst all the shiny new supercars. For those uninitiated in the nerdiness of aftermarket Land Rover Defenders, the Santana is a Defender that got the full treatment from Santan’s Spanish factory resulting in the Complete Knockdown Kit.
Other strange one-offs include a 2007 BMW 750i, a 2015 Mustang, 12 Fendt tractors, and other oddities, including a 2019 Mini Countryman that was being shipped in a wooden crate. If that last one doesn’t give you a twinge of the Italian Job, I don’t know what will.
There were even several cars we now know were heading for Mexico since SEATs aren’t sold north of the border. Lastly, CarScoops mentions that there was a Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 labeled only “tourist vehicle.” Despite its cryptic label, it may belong to The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah since we know he had a Boxster on the vessel.
