5 Things to Love About the Heavily Hated Ram 1500 Classic
Most previous-generation full-size pickup trucks are entirely replaced when a newly redesigned generation is launched. However, Chrysler surprisingly continues to sell its previous generation of the Ram 1500 as “Ram 1500 Classic” even after redesigning the 2019 Ram 1500. Placed alongside the all-new, fully loaded, full-size Ram 1500 that has gained great reviews and recognition, the Ram 1500 Classic is considerably inferior to most other full-size pickup trucks in its category.
The remarkably refined coil-spring rear suspension, luxurious whisper-quiet interior, and pricing of the Ram 1500 Classic are significant reasons why the full-size pickup truck is still selling despite being lesser than the newest full-size 2022 Ram 1500. Here are five things to love about the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic.
1. Sells at a low price for a full-size truck in its class
The price of the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic ranges between $29,650 to $47,540. The 2022 Ram 1500 ranges from $36,500 to $66,285. This denotes a cost saving of more than $6,500 over the cheapest 2022 Ram 1500. Although it might feel like a more reasonable buy, the 1500 Classic is not any different from other costly Ram full-size pickup trucks as it offers a range of powerful trims, engines, and enough towing power. The Ram 1500 Classic has proven its ability to pass the test of time compared to some of its competitors.
If having the newest latest technology and other safety extras is not a problem, the Ram 1500 Classic is a viable option as a basic work truck with more than enough towing and hauling capacity. For a full-size truck with this kind of power, performance, and class, that price is very low.
2. The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic offers a spacious interior
The Ram 1500 Classic’s interior is not as opulent or as modern as that of the current 2022 Ram 1500. Nevertheless, it is a pleasant spot to spend time, particularly if you choose some reasonably priced options like the Warlock trim. All three Ram 1500 Classic trims come standard with a front bench seat that splits in half 40/20/40.
While the Quad Cab and Crew Cab variants can accommodate up to six passengers, the Regular Cab model only accommodates three with Group Cab versions providing adequate space for a large crew of workers and families. The heated steering wheel and heated front bucket seats are optional.
3. The ride quality is comfortable
Exclusively, the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic has standard rear coil springs that give better lateral control and comfortable ride quality. This coil spring rear suspension gives the Ram 1500 Classic the needed comfort. The fact that shudders, shimmers, and noise are less noticeable as well refined in the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic makes it worth comparing to other newest full-size pickup trucks like the Nissan Titan.
Paired with a strong rear suspension, the Ram 1500 Classic comes with a great steering that gives a sense of the exact position of the truck. The truck can maintain an accurate driving experience on the highway, on rough terrains, and in different climate conditions. For example, in snowy conditions, the anti-spin rear differential detects wheel spin and adjusts to improve traction and control.
4. Lacks cabin noise
Even though most buyers consider towing and payload capacities, engine options, and utility features as the most important features when purchasing a full-size pickup truck, lack of cabin noise is key. A quiet cabin improves the driving experience and is more comfortable.
In Consumer Reports, the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic has been considered among the few full-size pickup trucks with no cabin noise. The road noise is almost inexistent, even with its stock body, huge side mirrors, and rumbling engine. Even better, the V8 engine rumble found in Warlock trim maintains the noise at a minimum, and all you might hear is a symphonic rumble every time you push the throttle.
5. The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic has robust powertrain performance
When it comes to full-size pickup trucks, power gets things done. The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic is still a great powertrain performer that upholds its core duties as a full-size pickup truck of its price with its powerful engine option and three trim options.
With an eight-speed automatic transmission, the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine’s 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque are produced at 4,175 revolutions per minute (rpm). A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 395 hp is the alternative. It has an eight-speed automatic transmission and 410 lb-ft of maximum torque at 3,950 rpm. Although rear-wheel drive is standard, a four-wheel drive is available. Both of which use electronic shift-on-the-fly.
Despite the shortcomings in its safety and driving features, the Ram 1500 Classic V6 engine model will undoubtedly get the job done as a work truck. However, if you need to carry heavy loads and more speeds, upgrade to the 5.7-liter Hemi V8.
At the end of the day, powertrain performance is key for most full-size pickup truck enthusiasts and owners.
