Lucid Air Sits Atop Luxury EV Sales, Beating out Porsche and Tesla
The gorgeous and ferociously fast Lucid Air is on a seemingly unstoppable winning streak. Alongside its fantastic looks, battery range that not even Tesla can best, and its relatively underground brand status, it’s getting all sorts of critical acclaim. It was even named the 2022 MotorTrend car of the year. Now, it’s getting even more love from critics and reviewers.
The Lucid Air is the best luxury electric car, according to two sources
The Observer reports that both U.S. News and World Report rank the Lucid Air at number one on their lists of best luxury EVs available in 2022. The factors considered range from the price to the Air’s remarkable range.
The Lucid Air is undoubtedly a massive upgrade in the luxury department compared to the winner of this award last year; the Tesla Model Y. Other competitors it beat out include the Porsche Taycan, BMW i4, Tesla Model S, Audi E-Tron GT, and the Mercedes EQS.
“Lucid Air brings decent value for what it is: It has good driving range, a heavy powertrain, good handling, etc. It’s been well received in its first month on the market,” said Colin Aylesworth, a senior editor with the U.S. News and World Report’s Autos team.
One of the most significant selling points that helped the Lucid Air collect this title is its remarkable battery range. The EPA rates the Air’s range between 451 and 520 miles on a charge from a 118-kilowatt-hour battery pack. This use of electricity is nearly twice as efficient as the battery packs in the Taycan or Model S.
Additionally, the Lucid Air is available with over 1,000 horsepower. It can sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour in under 2.5 seconds in that format. That’s certainly not slow, though it does fail to match the acceleration of the Tesla Model S Plaid. It does, however, beat out the Taycan Turbo S by a tenth of a second.
The pricing of the Air also makes the list of considerations
“Even though its price is high, it’s not the most expensive in this class, which helps it stand out,” said Aylesworth.
The Lucid Air offers a vast price range making it accessible to a huge spectrum of potential buyers. Pure, the lowest trim level, starts at $77,400. The upper two trim levels, Grand Touring and Dream, start at $139,000 and $169,000, respectively.
This makes the Pure trim level a substantial amount more affordable than the Model S, which starts at $99,900, and the Taycan, which starts at $82,700. It outdoes the base Audi E-Tron GT price by the most significant amount, though, as it has a starting price of $102,400.
The Dream, however, does top the most expensive Model S’s price tag of $135,990 after a March 2022 increase. However, it still comes in cheaper than the $185,000 Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
Despite only being on the road for about a month, the Air is dominating the EV circuit right now. In many ways, the path of Lucid Motors reflects the early years of Tesla. The company has a lot to prove, and it is doing everything it can to drive home the point that it makes quality vehicles. Certainly, Lucid is no joke. If the Air can withstand the tests of consumer use, the company likely has a long and successful path ahead.
