Macan: Most Popular Porsche Just Got A 2020 GTS Performance Package
The Porsche Macan is the most popular Porsche sold in the US. With sales of almost 21,000 in 2019 without the December data in yet, Porsche has been looking to offer more versions. Now, it will produce a new model with a more powerful engine, performance-tuned suspension, and upgraded interior. Called the 2020 Macan GTS, it will be available in the summer with a list price of $72,650.
The GTS stands for Gran Turismo Sport, which is like a sporting long-distance vehicle. Powering the GTS will be a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 375 hp. That’s 15 hp more than the best performing 2019 Macan. The top speed is estimated at 162 mph. The 0-to-60 mph time is 4.7 seconds. Ordered with the Sport Chrono package the acceleration numbers are lowered to 4.5 seconds.
Adaptive air suspension on GTS significantly improves handling
Standard in the Macan GTS is adaptive air suspension, which lowers the chassis 10 mm or ⅜-inch. Why Porsche calls out ⅜-inch is something we’ll have to ask at the next press conference. Standard wheels are 20-inch RS Spyder Design alloys for less unsprung weight and sporting looks. The brakes are cast-iron.
A brake option is the Porsche Surface Coat using a tungsten carbide coating. It is 10-times harder than traditional rotors. The coating increases friction that can aid in shortening stopping distances as well as reducing brake dust by almost 100%. It is corrosion-resistant, plus it helps the brakes last 30% longer than untreated cast iron.
The 2020 Macan GTS fascia is unique to this package
The main changes are for performance but externally the front fascia gets black painted trim and accents. Also, the headlights are LED and rear lights now have LED light bars while both come darkened. In the rear there are also black accents with a unique diffuser and tailpipes.
The exterior styling looks fantastic. The Porsche quality is expressed both inside and out. The Premium package gets you heated seats, auto-dimming mirrors, adaptive headlights, Apple CarPlay, and a 14 speaker audio system. Steering feel is typically lighter than in a comparable sports car but still gives adequate feedback while maintaining accuracy.
Lots of 2020 Macan interior and safety tech features are optional
Unfortunately, when it comes to interior features most are optional. That includes wireless Apple CarPlay, USB ports, and 12-volt outlets. The same is true of the safety tech features. The lane-departure warning is standard, but the automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control are all optional.
The 2020 Porsche Macan just landed on the Car & Driver 2020 10Best list. If the GTS is too pricey but you’d still like a Macan in your garage the base list price is $52,250. The intermediate “S” model fits between the two at $60,750. With the S model, you get the V6 as standard with much-improved performance. The Premium package and other options can send the price of a Macan through the roof so do your research and know where your pain threshold is on prices.
